Three individuals and a team were set to be inducted in 2020 and are finally getting their well-deserved recognition.

2020 additions include: Carson Duggan in the Athlete category for her athletic accomplishments in women’s hockey and her record-breaking career at St. Lawrence University; Allen York in the Athlete category for his outstanding professional ice hockey career as a goalscorer in the AJHL, ECHL, AHL and NHL; Marilyn Snedden as Builder for her volunteer efforts of the Wetaskiwin community across a variety of sports and Wetaskiwin sports organizations; and the 1981 Juvenile Men’s Avalanche Volleyball Team, which won the 1981 provincial championships and a bronze medal at the 1981 Canadian Championships.

In addition to honoring the 2020 inductees, the Board has added two other worthy individuals to the list of inductees to be honored at this year’s banquet.

Both are included in the Builder category; Rod Hok for his volunteer work at Rodeo; and Donald Forth for his years of volunteering in stock car racing and coaching youth bowling.

This will be the 15th induction ceremony in the history of the Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame. The Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2006 and to date has inducted 89 athletes, builders and teams. If you count all the members of the teams, over 450 people were admitted.

The Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame helps preserve Wetaskiwin’s sports history for future generations. Plaques of those inducted since 2006 are proudly displayed in the Co-Op Place. Information and pictures of each of the past inductees can be found on the Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame website at www.wetaskiwnsportsfame.com.

The past three years have been quite a stressful and difficult time for the Board of Directors of the Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame.

We rely solely on ticket sales and community sponsorship to cover all expenses for our annual banquet and awards along with our overheads (including insurance, storage fees for our records and equipment, and advertising costs).

As we have had no income for the past three years, our resources are limited.

To ensure we continue to recognize both athletes and builders of our community, we encourage Wetaskiwin and county citizens to support these worthy new additions by attending this year’s banquet and induction ceremony.

Invitations are open to all and banquet tickets are available through April 8th from ATB Financial in Wetaskiwin. The banquet will be held on April 15th at the Best Western Wayside Inn.
