Spurs latest: Four key tasks for Cristian Stellini after Antonio Conte leaves Tottenham by mutual consent
Tottenham have appointed Cristian Stellini as acting head coach until the end of the season. Spurs made the decision to part ways after exceptional talk after last Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Southampton.
Here, the PA news agency takes a look at what will be in Stellini’s inbox.
Boosts squad morale
Team morale will be understandably low after Conte’s tirade against “selfish players” who “played for themselves” last weekend. It wasn’t the first time the Italian had turned against the group and while some of the impassioned monologues hit the nail on the head, it made his position untenable. The majority of Spurs players left for international duty immediately after their collapse at St Mary’s and the new environment may have helped them forget the explosive South Coast scenes, but it has ensured that all eyes are on one Squad that has underperformed this season. It was expected that a flurry of summer activities would lead to more consistency. Instead, the opposite has happened and although there has been a managerial change, battered egos remain.

Attack on the day!
Tottenham were scoring free goals in the final months of the 2021/22 season and it was Conte’s 3-4-3 system in full swing. When his tried and true formation of full-backs and three attackers clicks, it can be a joy to watch, but those days have been rare this campaign. Spurs supporters have instead experienced repeated dull first halves, with a pragmatic team sitting back and pressuring. Inevitably, this has resulted in conceding 40 goals in 28 Premier League games. But fans would accept a leaky defense if she went full throttle in attack. However, a third of the goals scored under Conte in the top flight came from set pieces, leaving their toothless nature on offense. An easy way to get the fan base back on the side would be to abandon the negative counter tactics of the last three managers.
Eliminate misfiring forwards
While Harry Kane has been a model of consistency this season with 23 goals, his fellow strikers have struggled. Son Heung-min, who jointly won the Premier League Golden Boot last May, has scored in just six of his 37 games this season and has been a shadow of his former self as his confidence seemed to be drained every week. Meanwhile, £60m new signing Richarlison has not scored in the league and has managed just two goals in an injury-hit season. Fourth big hitter, Dejan Kulusevski, has also only found the net twice, with Conte relying on individual magic misfires. If Spurs are to achieve anything in their last 10 games, Kane will finally need some much-needed support.

Get the top 4 batch back on track
Conte’s exit may look odd on paper with Spurs fourth in the table, but they have Newcastle breathing down their necks, while Liverpool and Brighton will no doubt be firmly in the Champions League qualifying race. Tottenham are already guaranteed their 15th straight season without a title and for many fans another top four result won’t be enough, but anything else will make it a disastrous season. Crucially, a return to Europe’s elite competition could be a way of convincing Kane to stick around and the financial windfall for the club will certainly translate into some of the summer spending for the new boss. While April sees fixtures against Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool in a tight seven-day period, six of Spurs’ other games are against teams in the bottom half. Fourth place is up for grabs.
