St. Stephens baseball slips past Alexander Central; Friday’s sporting events affected by weather

Mother Nature made her mark in the first week of high school’s spring sports season, forcing numerous sporting events to be brought forward, postponed, or canceled altogether. Baseball and softball games were played Thursday at Alexander Central, but competitions scheduled for Friday for teams in Catawba and Caldwell counties were marred by forecast rain and thunderstorms.

Below is how Thursday’s baseball and softball games played out at Alexander Central, along with a list of the postponements and cancellations announced for teams at Daily hickory record‘s coverage area at press time on Friday.

1 St Stephens, Alexander Central 0: The Indians posted an away win against the Cougars in Taylorsville Thursday, with Peyton Young providing four hits with 12 strikeouts, three walks and two hits as a batter in a full game performance. Young also had the competition’s only RBI top of the first inning while Landon Harris had two of St. Stephens’ three hits and Justin Skewes the other.

Alexander Central (1-1) received a hit each from Bubba Pope, JD Little, Sawyer Chapman-Mays and Caleb Williams, the latter of whom suffered defeat despite beating the Indians (3-0) on an unearned run and two hits limited six innings. Williams also hit 11, walking two and hitting a batter before making way for Alex Sloan in the seventh.

St Stephens host South Iredell on Wednesday while Alexander Central will visit Western Harnett on Saturday before hosting South Iredell on Tuesday.

Alexander Central 5, Gun School 0: Alexander Central eclipsed Cannon at home in Taylorsville on Thursday, improving to 2-0 after beating the visitors 5-3 behind two goals from Lainey Russell and one each from Alyssa Chapman, Mcartney Harrington and Macy Law. Law earned the win after six innings with three hits, six strikeouts and three walks, while Laney Wike picked up the save by retiring the team in the seventh in turn and registering two strikeouts during her time in the pitcher’s circle.

The Cougars were due to compete in the Spartan Classic in South Caldwell on Saturday, but that event has now been postponed to April 15. As for Cannon (1-2), it hosts West Cabarrus on Tuesday.
