Tennis scores and latest updates from Roland Garros as third round continues

The French Open is nearing the end of its first week at Roland Garros while the third continues on Saturday, with Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina among those looking to secure their place in the round of 16.

Defending champion Swiatek meets Wang The match of the day, however, is a contest between last year’s finalist Coco Gauff and 16-year-old breakout star Mirra Andreeva.

Cameron Norrie’s campaign ended in disappointment with a straight-set loss to Lorenzo Musetti on Friday, while Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka continued to navigate controversy off the pitch at Roland Garros to advance to the fourth round.

Djokovic defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina amid the fallout of his decision to write ‘Kosovo is the heart of Serbia’ on camera after his first-round win as the Serb continued his bid to win the 23rd men’s Grand Slam.

With a straight-set win over Kamilla Rakhimova, Sabalenka renewed her attempt to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles. This comes after she was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist after her second-round win and Sabalenka subsequently failed to perform her usual media duties, citing mental health concerns.

Aryna Sabalenka skipped her usual media duties at the French Open over mental concerns following her third-round win over Kamilla Rakhimova.

The runner-up was embroiled in a tense exchange with a Ukrainian journalist on Wednesday about her past support for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

“I have been answering these questions at tournaments for many months and have been very clear in my feelings and thoughts,” said Sabalenka.

“These questions no longer bother me after my games. I know that I have to give the media answers about things that have nothing to do with my tennis or my games, but on Wednesday I didn’t feel safe at the press conference.

“I should be able to feel safe doing interviews with the journalists after my games. In the interest of my own mental health and well-being, I made a decision to pull myself out of this situation today and the tournament supported me in that decision.”

Cameron Norrie criticized his own attitude and performance after his French Open season ended in a straight-set loss to Lorenzo Musetti in the third round.

It is the third year in a row that the British no. 1 has failed in the last 32 and he only managed to put up a real challenge in the third set before falling 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

There’s certainly no shame in losing to 21-year-old Musetti, who is just five places behind Norrie and whose best surface is clay, but the No. 14 seeded was by the way one of his worst Grand Slams – suffered defeats, deeply disappointed with the result.

The result, meanwhile, ended British singles hopes of a tournament in which only three players ever started.

“I came out very flat and I’m disappointed with the attitude in the first few sets,” said a very depressed Norrie.

“It was very, very slow conditions, very difficult, and I wasn’t prepared for it to be that slow. As for me, I’m bad at play and all, but I was just really weak and disappointed with such a performance.

“He didn’t really do much in the first two sets and he was two sets up to love. For a player like me, I can’t afford to give such a big advantage.

“There are no excuses to play the level I played today. I’ve missed so many easy short shots and lost so many points in a few shots that I can usually win a lot of them.

“I wasn’t prepared. I changed racquets throughout the game. It was a bit colder today, but I’m good enough not to let that bother me.”

Novak Djokovic admitted he is struggling with a series of physical issues after beating a terrific challenge from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the fourth round of the French Open for the 14th straight year.

The 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-2 win lasted three hours and 36 minutes, with Djokovic failing twice in the first set and having to save a set ball in the second set.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion looked unnerved in windy conditions when he called the coach for a left thigh massage ahead of the third set, but as so often, he found a way to emerge victorious.

When asked about the medical break, Djokovic said: “We don’t have much time to list the many injuries I have and the list is quite long.”

“I kept playing anyway. Those are the circumstances you have to deal with as a professional athlete. Accept. Sometimes you need help from a physical therapist during the game. Sometimes you need pills. Sometimes you need help from God or angels or whoever.

“The reality for me these days is that my body reacts differently than it did a few years ago. I managed to finish the game.”
