Baaeed (176 points) consolidated his grip at the top of the Cartier Horse of the Year rankings with a sensational performance at the Juddmonte International on day one of the Ebor Festival in York.

Moving up to middle distance for the first time after nine consecutive one-mile wins, home-bred Shadwell took his form to new heights with a stunning six-and-a-half-long judgment on 2021 winner Mishriff.

The highest rated racehorse in the world, who also has a commanding advantage in the Cartier Older Horse category, is likely to have his swan song in either the QIPCO Champion Stakes or the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. More directly, Baaeed could face Vadeni (88), the leader of Cartier’s three-year-old Colt, in next month’s Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.

The admirable mare Alpinista (64) has the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as her autumn goal after a fifth straight G1 win at the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, a feat that put Kirsten Rausing’s home-bred horse in contention for the Cartier Older Horse .

Inspiral (96) has carved out a narrow lead in the Cartier three-year-old Filly division after winning the 2022 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois in Deauville, France’s premier all-age mile competition.

That win also propelled the Cheveley Park Stud filly to second place in the Cartier Horse of the Year rankings and it looks set to be another G1 against male opponents in the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot in October Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO).

Highfield Princess (80), who had an official rating of just 57 two years ago, has gained a sizeable lead in the Cartier Sprinter standings thanks to two G1 victories within 12 days.

After winning the ARC Prix Maurice de Gheest in Deauville, the five-year-old was a dominant winner of the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes in York in her second start over five furlongs.

Quickthorn (44) is the rising force in the Cartier Stayer ranks after beating the competition by 14 lengths in the Weatherby’s Hamilton Lonsdale Cup while completing a hat-trick of group wins.

Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt standings, with Darley Prix Morny winner Blackbeard (64) at the top and stablemate Little Big Bear (40) in third after a deeply impressive win the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. Persian Force (56) is in second place after taking second place behind the two Coolmore youths.

Another O’Brien-trained horse, Meditate (32), leads the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly category after extending her unbeaten record to four in the Debutante Stakes. Duchess of Cambridge Stakes winner Mawj (20), who finished second to Meditate in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, is second best with a multitude of mares with 16 points.

About the Cartier Racing Awards

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horse racing. There are eight horse awards – Cartier Horse Of The Year, Cartier Older Horse, Cartier Sprinter, Cartier Stayer, Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt, Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly, Cartier Two-Year-Old Old Colt and the Two-Year-Old Filly of Cartier.

The highest accolades in European horse racing are awarded through a combination of points earned by horses in pattern races (30%) combined with the opinions of a jury of racing journalists/handicappers (35%) and readers’ votes at the end of the season by Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph (35%).

In addition to the Equine Awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the Cartier jury of 16, have done the most for European racing and/or breeding in a lifetime or within the last 12 Months. Recent recipients of the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit include Sir Michael Stoute, Aidan O’Brien, Pat Smullen and John Gosden.

The 32nd Cartier Racing Awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on the evening of November 9th.
