TikTok’s Latest Interior Design Trend Is Loud and Maximalist

Bright colors, clashing patterns, and total maximalism are just some of the defining characteristics of the latest home decor trend making its rounds on TikTok.

Known as “dopamine decor,” this style of interior design differs from the various minimalist styles that have become popular over the past several decades. The key element behind dopamine decor is to fill the home with everything colorful and fun that brings joy, even when it all clashes aesthetically.

TikTok creator and interior designer Laura Hall, known on the platform as @thehexagonalhouse, posted a video showing how she applies the design to her home, which amassed over 37,000 views as of May 4th.

Bright colors covered every surface of the interior, wallpaper with intricate floral patterns lined the walls and vintage furniture filled the rooms – there is not a single boring corner in the house.

“It might not be for everyone, but adding color to my home brings me so much joy — a real touch of dopamine,” the caption for her video reads, and many users have left supportive comments expressing the design gush.

“Can’t wait to have my own space to decorate everything so colorfully,” read one comment. “I love every bit of it. So cozy,” read another.

Several other TikTokers have also started sharing their dopamine decors. TikToker @foreveryoursbetty shared a video of their performance which amassed over 20,000 likes as of May 4th.

Dopamine decor can seem like overkill to some, especially since quiet, minimalist designs like Mid-Century Modern and Japandi have dominated the industry for years.

But the seemingly random design style actually has a hidden element of thought.

“Dopamine decorating is all about making you feel good in your home and surrounding yourself with feel-good colors and objects,” Hall told Insider.

“For me it’s about adding colour, collecting things like vintage pottery, adding quirky items around the place, lots of fun colors and patterns,” said the 38-year-old.

Hall shared that she’s always decorated her home this way, but she’s only recently given it a name.
