Tim Hortons Brier 2023 Final: Brad Gushue’s Team Canada repeats at Canadian men’s curling championship

Brad Gushue finds himself once again at the forefront of the Canadian men’s curling world.

The legendary Newfoundland curler became the first Skip to ever win five Briers when he led Team Canada to a win over Matt Dunstone’s Team Manitoba in the 2023 Tim Hortons Brier Finals.

The back and forth began in the eighth end as Gushue secured three points for his side to break a 3-3 tie. Dunstone and Manitoba hit back, closing the gap to 6-5 en route to the final finish, but Gushue was not denied another championship win and walked away from London with a 7-5 win.

With the win, Gushue and his team of leader Geoff Walker, runner-up EJ Harden and third-placed Mark Nichols travel to the 2023 Men’s Curling World Championship to represent Canada. This tournament takes place in Ottawa in the first week of April.

22:08 — That’s it. Dunstone and Manitoba got it right in the 10th set, but Gushue and Canada went one better. Canada scores a singles in 10th place to end the finals 7-5. It’s Gushue’s fifth Brier win and his team are going back-to-back despite the Brier’s personnel changes.

21:50 — Manitoba needed some magic to stay in, and the team is getting it. Dunstone grabs two in the ninth set to draw within one, giving his team a chance to equalize with a steal in the 10th. It’s crunch time in London, with Canada still leading 6-5.

Eighth End

21:29 — An absolutely tremendous moment in the final. Dunstone misplaces his last shot, leaving Gushue a chance to save three. Team Canada Skip lands the hammer and takes three points for Canada. Gushue and his team lead 6-3 into the last two ends.

21:13 — Before the eighth end, here comes the Brier Tankard. Whose name will end up on the coveted curling trophy, Gushue’s rink or Dunstone’s?

21:12 — Another single for Manitoba to tie the knot once again. Dunstone comes through with a sensational double takeout that opens the door for the single point. 3: 3 it goes into the eighth.

20:53 — The back and forth continues. Gushue tried to pull for two but missed the last stone. Canada is forced to settle for single. Gushue’s rink back on top, 3-2.

Fifth End

20:34 — It’s a back and forth in London. Dunstone pulls on the button just enough to register the single. Back to a tie at the break, 2-2. Buckle up folks.

20:18 — An extremely well-placed final checker from Dunstone wipes out Gushue’s opportunity to add two points. The defending champion secures a singles with the hammer, 2-1 Canada.

Third ending

8 p.m. — Gushue gives Dunstone a hard time again with his sensational first throw for a double while Dunstone sat one. Dunstone settles for a single, placing the hammer nicely on the button to knot the matchstick.

second ending

19:40 — Gushue takes the first point of the match and secures a single in the second end. Some pressure from Dunstone’s rink with three rockers in place, but a well-placed hammer on Gushue’s button puts the team on the board.

First ending

19:25 — A mistake by Dunstone leads to a blank in the first end. He was three rocks up with the hammer, but it rolled out. Gushue looked like a force at the end, but Dunstone’s miss helps the end result leave a blank.

19 o’clock – Another big storyline for this evening is the Harnden brothers’ game against each other. Ryan is in his freshman year as a leader at Dunstone’s rink and his older brother EJ is currently throwing second place at Gushue’s rink. No matter what, a Harnden brother will win the 2023 Brier.

6:30 p.m. – While Gushue aims to become the first Skip in Brier history to secure five titles, Dunstone on the other hand is aiming for his first. He has never played in a Brier final; The closest he has come before is a bronze medal, which he earned in 2020 and 2021.

6 p.m. — The finals are a repeat of the playoffs from earlier in the tournament. On Saturday night, Gushue defeated Dunstone’s rink 5-4 to advance to the final. The loss to Dunstone propelled him to the semifinals early Sunday, where he defeated Bottcher to play in the championship game.
