TNT Sports, The Future Name for BT Sport

TNT Sports will be the new name for the premium sports brand to be launched later this year by the joint venture (JV) between BT Group and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The new name marks a major step in previously announced plans to combine BT Sport’s and Eurosport’s enviable collection of premium rights into a single offering going forward. In July 2023, TNT Sports will replace the BT Sport name and will mark the beginning of a new journey and relationship with sports fans in the UK and Ireland, continuing the spirit of what BT Sport has built over the past decade.

This new sports brand in the UK and Ireland will come to life for the first time later this year ahead of the start of the 2023/2024 football season. Until then, fans will continue to enjoy BT Sport across all channels and platforms as they do today.

“Today is another important step towards launching a simpler and even more compelling offering for sports fans in the UK and Ireland,” he says Andrew Georgiou, Board Member of the Joint Venture and President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe. “Already synonymous with world-class live sport in a number of countries around the world, the TNT Sports name is yet another sign of the global reach and expertise Warner Bros. Discovery brings to its partnership with BT.

“While Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to bring its global reach and capabilities along with its growing portfolio of premium entertainment, we’re also determined to ensure we don’t compromise on the inimitable, local style that is at the heart of the company Way BT Sport has engaged with fans over the past decade. Staying authentically local will remain key to our success.”

“We are pleased with the progress being made on the joint venture,” he says Marc Allera, CEO of BT Consumer Division and Chairman of the joint venture with Warner Brothers Discovery. “This change marks the next logical step for BT Sport as well as the broader transformation of our consumer business. Once launched, this will be a very exciting new premium sports offering for customers in the UK and Ireland.”

While TNT Sports will have its own UK & Ireland brand reflecting the fan-first approach that BT Sport has become known for, the name already has strong associations with premium live sport in other territories and among the family by Warner Bros. Discovery brands. This includes a number of countries in Latin America being home to top domestic and European soccer, while live sports has long been a staple of the TNT network in the US, including the NBA, NHL and NCAA.

TNT Sports will present BT Sport’s live sports rights today, while Eurosport will continue to be available in the UK and Ireland in the same way as today, before being incorporated into the new brand at some point in the future.

With the 2023/2024 football season approaching, Discovery+ will become the streaming home for sports fans who can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport and entertainment all in one place. BT Sport subscribers already enjoy free access to Discovery+, which includes Eurosport’s streaming offering and a wide range of entertainment programmes.

Combined, this provides one of the most comprehensive live sports coverage for fans in the UK and Ireland – including the Olympics, Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC, Boxing, WWE, Tennis Grand Slams, Cycling Grand Tours and the winter sports season.

The 50:50 joint venture between BT and Warner Bros. Discovery was formed on September 1, 2022. Warner Bros. Discovery manages the operations of the joint venture, with BT Sport’s manufacturing and operations assets transferred to the company as of that date.
