Toy Story 5: Release date speculation, cast and latest news
Pixar might be storming ahead with new original films lately, including Elemental, Turning Red, and Soul, but it’s certainly not afraid to return to its franchises.
One of Pixar’s most popular franchises is, of course, Toy Story, which grew out of their first film starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, which was released in 1995 — just look at Lightyear, the 2022 spin-off film starring Chris Evans .
However, it’s now been four years since we last saw the gang in full on the big screen – so does this mean the end for the Toy Story franchise, or can we still expect another outing?
Read on for everything you need to know about Toy Story 5.
Will there be a Toy Story 5?
It will! Nearly four years after the fourth film’s debut, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in February 2023 that Toy Story 5 is officially in the works, along with sequels from two of the studio’s other popular franchises.
Iger said, “I am very pleased to announce today that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios on some of our most beloved franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia.”
When will Toy Story 5 be released?
It’s not yet known when Toy Story 5 will be released – but we can look at previous versions to get a sense of when we’ll see it.
For example, Toy Story 4 was originally announced in 2014 before coming out in 2019. If the fifth film needs a similar production time, we can count on that Theatrical release 2028. If so, prepare for a long wait.
However, the film could certainly go through its production faster, and we’ll update this page as more concrete information becomes available.
What will Toy Story 5 be about?
The news that Toy Story 5 is on the way took a number of fans by surprise, not least because the end of Toy Story 4 felt final. In fact, producer Mark Nielsen said at the time, “We see Toy Story 3 as the end of Woody’s time with Andy, and we really see this as the conclusion of Woody’s arc and the story of Buzz and Woody.”
In this film, Woody reunited with Bo Peep and at the end of the film decided to stay with her and broke up with the group as they left with Bonnie.
Nothing is currently known about the plot of Toy Story 5 Twitter post by Tim Allen Following Disney’s announcement, it certainly seems like the film will reunite Woody and Buzz after their goodbyes at the end of the previous film.
Allen said: “See you soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And let’s start with number 5! To infinity and beyond!”
We’ll update this page as we know more about what to expect.
Toy Story 5 Cast – Who’s Returning for the Fifth Movie?
We’d certainly expect Tom Hanks to reprise his role as Woody for Toy Story 5, and as mentioned above, Tim Allen seems to have already confirmed on Twitter that he’ll be back as Buzz after Chris Evans cast another version of the character played in the spin-off film Lightyear.
We’d also expect that the majority of the Toy Story 4 cast could return, including Andy’s original toy group, Bonnie’s toys (including Forky), and some of the lost toys that Woody met with Bo Peep, including Ducky, Bunny, and Duke Caboom.
Two actors who will unfortunately not be able to reprise their roles are Don Rickles and Estelle Harris, who played Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. The former died in 2017 and appeared posthumously in the fourth film using archival footage, while the latter died in 2022.
More like that
It is currently unknown if the roles will be recast, if the characters will be written out of the film, or if the actors will appear posthumously through the use of archival footage.
For now, here’s a list of the actors we envision might return for Toy Story 5:
