Liz Cheney reacts to Carlson’s January 6 account

Former Republican Congresswoman and January 6th Committee member Liz Cheney has some thoughts on the portrayal of the Capitol riots as compiled by Tucker Carlson for his show.

She tweeted on Tuesday: “A lesson from January 6th is this: Trump’s lies, circulated on television and social media, provoked a violent attack on our Capitol. No responsible adult, and especially no American committed to our Constitution, should deny what happened or repeat the same reckless lies.”

Ms Cheney followed suit today, responding to CNN’s coverage that Republicans want a new Jan. 6 investigation by saying, “If [House Republicans] wants new hearings on January 6th, bring it on. Let’s repeat every witness and evidence from last year. But this time, those members who asked for pardons and/or hid from subpoenas should sit on the pedestal so they can face the incontrovertible evidence on live television.”

Brian Sicknick’s partner speaks out

Sandra Garza, Brian Sicknick’s partner, has spoken out after Tucker Carlson portrayed the riot in the Capitol as peaceful and questioned the narrative of Mr Sicknick’s death in the days after the riot.

I am appalled that this new footage was shown on Tucker Carlson’s show and that he is downplaying the importance of Brian’s death. He’s not a doctor or psychotherapist… It’s ridiculous that he’s acting as an expert.

Capitol Police chief accuses Tucker Carlson of using “picked” footage from Jan. 6

Tucker Carlson’s words were flatly rebuffed even by Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell, but also by US Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger.

According to Mr Manger, Carlson’s episode “provides no context” for clips, including those showing rioters interacting with officers who tried to verbally convince them to leave, knowing law enforcement was outnumbered.

Here is the full text of Mr Manger’s memo to colleagues.

Last night, an opinion program aired a commentary filled with insulting and misleading conclusions about the January 6 attack. The Opinion Program has never contacted the Ministry to provide accurate context.

A false accusation is that our officers assisted the rioters and acted as “tour guides”. This is rude and wrong. The department is standing by the officers in the video that was shown last night. I don’t need to remind you how outnumbered our officers were on January 6th. These officers did their best to use de-escalation tactics to try to get the rioters to get each other out of the building.

The program has been conveniently selected from the quieter moments of our 41,000 hours of video footage. The commentary provides no context about the chaos and violence that took place before or during these less tense moments.

Finally, last night’s most disturbing allegation was that the death of our late friend and colleague Brian Sicknick had nothing to do with his exploits on January 6. Hours on the day he was violently assaulted had Officer Sicknick not died the next day .

Some people choose from 41,000 hours of video clips that seem to support the narrative they want to advance, those of you who were here on January 6th, those of you who were in the fight, those of you who made that no congressman was injured, those of you who have contributed to the effort to move the country’s legislative process forward know firsthand what actually happened.

You fought like hell on January 6th, risking your life to protect the Constitution and everything this country stands for. You, along with our law enforcement partners, saved every congressman and their staff.

TV commentary will not record the truth for our history books. The judiciary will. Truth and justice are on our side.
