Who are the contenders?
Most British cycling fans will know Ethan Hayter for his success on the road with Ineos Grenadiers. However, his journey on two wheels began when he was 13 at his local velodrome in Herne Hill. Since then, the Londoner has won rainbow jerseys on the track in the team pursuit and omnium, as well as a silver medal in the Madison at last year’s Olympics.
Hayter joins Ethan Vernon, Ollie Wood, Dan Bigham, Rhys Britton and Will Perrett on Britain’s long-distance squad. The group’s main goal is likely to be the team pursuit, but they’ll need to fend off Olympic champions Italy if they want to claim the rainbow ribbons.
When it comes to sprinting, 25 years old Harry Lawreysen is probably the best in the world. The Dutchman is a nine-time world champion, six-time European champion and the owner of two Olympic gold medals. Every race Lavreysen starts, you don’t want to bet against his powerful kick.
Likewise German speedster Emma Hinze comes to this year’s Worlds in amazing form. Already in August she stormed to European titles in the sprint, team sprint and 500-meter time trial. It will take something special to stop either Hinze or her compatriot Lea Sophie Friedrich prevalent in Paris.
In the women’s endurance competitions Klara Copponi hopes to repeat her memorable road season, which saw her sprint to her first pro wins. The FDJ Suez Futuroscope rider won the gold medal in the Omnium at this year’s European Championships and is therefore the clear favorite at the World Championships.
Five years ago, Near Evans Balancing her career as a veterinarian with her career as an athlete. Now she is an Olympic silver medalist. The 32-year-old was one of the standout athletes at this year’s British Track Championships, where she clinched three new titles in all endurance disciplines. Evans is likely to be an important part of the British team pursuit, where she will compete alongside Olympic gold medalists Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald.
