UConn vs. Ohio State final score, results: Buckeyes advance, Huskies miss Elite Eight for 1st time since ’05

UConn and Ohio State are among the top programs in their respective conferences, and it showed on the Seattle court Saturday night when the Buckeyes walked away with a 73-61 win.

With the win, 3-seeded Ohio State not only advanced to its first Elite Eight since 1993, it also ended 2-seeded UConn’s nearly two-decade streak of getting past the Sweet 16 — the last time the Huskies did so fell early was in 2005.

Cotie McMahon and Jacy Sheldon are the main reasons the Buckeyes are riding high. McMahon scored 23 points before fouling in the final minutes and Sheldon added 17 while going 10-for-10 from the charity strip.

Ohio State surpassed UConn 21-9 in the second quarter as its press stifled. The Huskies committed 25 turnovers for the game.

UConn was led by Lou Lopez-Sénéchal with 25 points. Azzi Fudd added 14 and Dorka Juhász had 13.

Finals: Ohio State 73, UConn 61

6:12 p.m.: McMahon fouled, but her performance is second to none. She finished with 23 points. Kevin McGuff’s team is just seconds away from an elite eighth place, ending UConn’s streaks.

Ohio State advances to the Elite Eight and meets the winner Tennessee-Virginia Tech.

6:10 p.m.: UConn commits a 25th turnover and Auriemma jumps up and down the sidelines quite angrily.

18:04: McMahon completes a game with three points, ending the 9-0 run for UConn. A play is reviewed after Aubrey Griffin pushes Sheldon to the ground. It stands and Sheldon grabs both of them on the leash.

6:03 p.m.: UConn didn’t do well in the charity flick tonight and that’s really holding her back. While Ohio State is 18-to-24, UConn is only 6-to-13.

5:56 p.m.: The last time Connecticut didn’t make it out of the Sweet 16 was in 2005. If Ohio State wins today, they will break a nearly two-decade streak from the Huskies. It would be the Buckeyes’ fourth Elite Eight trip, their last in 1993.

5:50 p.m.: “We picked the worst day to do everything we’ve struggled with this season,” Geno Auriemma said on the show.

Third quarter: Ohio State 54, UConn 44

5:39 p.m.: Lopez-Sénéchal has 17 points, taking UConn to eight before the end of the third quarter. She’s the only double-figure player for the Huskies while the Buckeyes have McMahon at 20 and Sheldon at 11.

Edwards is on the bench with four fouls, Juhász just conceded a third and McMahon has four for Ohio State.

5:28 p.m.: UConn catches up with Ohio state in a three-minute drought. The Buckeyes have walked the line 14 times this game and caught 12 of the shots. UConn has 22 sales, the golden number for the Ohio State Press.

5:24 p.m.: Ohio State forced 20 turnovers from UConn for 19 points. They also have 19 rebounds. Lopez-Sénéchal is back on the pitch after the half-time break and is good for the Huskies.

Halftime: Ohio State 36, UConn 26

5:01 p.m.: Sheldon misses the three-point jumper and Caroline Ducharme sinks one at the line manages to put UConn in the half within 10.

4:57 p.m.: McMahon at the line moves Ohio State up 11. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year shines on the big stage, confident and comfortable in her first appearance at the Sweet 16. She already has 18 points tonight but just conceded her second foul.

4:54 p.m.: Positive update from ESPN’s Holly Rowe on Lopez-Sénéchal – they’ve been stretching extensively and she’s currently on the bike.

4:49 p.m.: UConn didn’t score a single goal in the second quarter. Lopez-Sénéchal is knocked down with an injury. Cameras cut to her on the bench while a trainer holds her right knee. This UConn team are no strangers to injuries, but taking down another top player at a time like this is damaging.

4:40 p.m.: McMahon is on fire, burying a three-point jumper after a UConn turnover to give Ohio State their first lead of the afternoon. UConn already has 12 turnovers in 12 minutes.

First Quarter: UConn 17, Ohio State 15

4:33 p.m.: Ohio State managed to take the game to two points after a long struggle. They flip it in the last second of the quarter, but Connecticut can only bring it within limits.

4:17 p.m.: UConn is already in double digits as Ohio State calls their first timeout, just 2 points at the end. The huskies cook early.

4:13 p.m.: UConn wins the jumpshot and kicks things off with a layup from Lopez-Sénéchal.

4:11 p.m.: ESPN’s Andraya Carter says on the show that there are only two teams in the country that each have five players averaging double figures, and both teams are UConn and Ohio State.

3:56 p.m.: The starting grids have been published.
