UFC 285 live fight updates, results, highlights from Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane

A new heavyweight champion will be crowned at UFC 285 on March 4th. On one side is former interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane. On the other side of the cage is former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Jones, 35, took a three-year hiatus from MMA to prepare his body for life in the heavyweight division. “Bones” is a complete fighter with ten wins by knockout and six submission wins. He hasn’t suffered a loss since 2009, the only blemishes on his career being DQ losses and no contests due to failed drug tests.

Gane was an accomplished Muay Thai fighter before turning pro in MMA. The 32-year-old joined the UFC in 2019 and is 8-1 on promotion. He has five wins by knockout and has only gone the distance three times (2-1 in those fights).

Known as an intelligent caged fighter, Gane can manipulate his surroundings and force his opponents to fatigue. Jones doesn’t see Gane’s game plan as an advantage and instead sees holes in his game.

“I respect Ciryl Gane, I really do, but I study film all the time and I just see a lot of patterns,” Jones said of MMA Junkie. “When he’s in an attitude, there are things he really enjoys doing. He often goes to the same well. When he is in the opposite attitude, he has his tendencies. That being said, I realized that he doesn’t do much wrestling. He tries to dodge, trying to escape. He relies on jiu-jitsu over solid takedown defense, and the same goes for ground play. I’ve watched Francis Ngannou go maybe five, six minutes top time in this fight and Francis isn’t a guy who’s known for controlling people at the front.

“He has the hitting down. I don’t think he’s a very strong kickboxer defensively. He has a really nice offense. Like I said, his defense is mostly his footwork, and two other big holes are jiu-jitsu and wrestling.”

In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko will defend the UFC flyweight title against Alexa Grasso. Shevchenko is on an eight-fight win streak and has held the flyweight title since 2019. Grasso is on a four-fight win streak and appears to be the one to solve the Shevchenko problem.
