The United States controlled the game from start to finish, beating Germany 50-11 en route to victory.

“We had a really good start to the game and I liked how we stayed consistent,” said US head coach Nate Leaman. “We had six or seven good chances and the Germany goalkeeper made good saves. We could have been frustrated but we didn’t and in the end the lads were rewarded.”

Switzerland ended up wrong in a close 3-2 game against Sweden on Wednesday. From a 3-0 deficit, goals from Attilio Biasco and Dario Allanspach cut Sweden’s lead to one, but the Swiss failed to level.

Luke Hughes tracker

In each game, we’ll highlight a Team USA player to follow during the matchup.

For the duel against Switzerland we focus on Luke Hughes. The University of Michigan defenseman is the youngest brother of NHL stars Quinn and Jack Hughes. He scored and assisted in the opening game against Germany, earning bragging rights in the family as the only person to score at World Juniors.

Hughes is an attacking defender who can fly a power play across the ice with the puck and quarterback. He was the #4 pick in the 2021 Devils draft pick. He will be a top defender from the USA throughout the tournament.

1st period

Not much action in the first period from, well, anyone. Hughes had a couple of chances, where he used his skate to clear space on the offensive blue line and sent a couple of shots into the net, but otherwise an uneventful period from the US defender.

2nd period

Hughes does an excellent job of keeping the game alive and his holding of the blue line results in a goal for USA. He stands upright and sends the puck back over the boards on the power play, leading to a Carter Mazur goal seconds later.

Later in the frame, again, it’s his footwork and ability to walk the blue line that’s outstanding. Catching the eyes of the Swiss defenders, he slices towards the center but quickly reverses and spins the other way. His shot from the point goes through and is tapped by Kevin Pasche’s Matt Coronato for America’s fifth goal of the game.

End of 2nd period: USA 5, Switzerland 1

23:39 — What a time for Americans. A five-goal barrage from the US and they go into the third goal by four. It’s clear that Switzerland’s game last night is catching up to them as they just don’t have the legs to keep up with the USA at the moment. Pasche did what he could to keep them in contention but you can’t fault him for any of the goals.

11:38 p.m. – GOAL! And another one. This quickly escaped the Swiss. Hughes does a great job pulling defenders towards him at the blue line, twists and fires a shot on target which is tipped over by Matt Coronato. It’s 5-1 with less than a minute left in 2nd place.

11:35 p.m. – GOAL! That one hits the thread as the first line for the United States is capitalized once more. Wyatt Kaiser is left unattended at the top of the blue line, he gets the puck and fires a shot at goal which is tipped high by Slaggert. Thomas Bordeleau, Mazur and Slaggert were well past the best line for Nate Leaman’s crew tonight.

23:33 — The USA almost make it 4-1 when Jacob Truscott comes in from the point and rings a shot off the iron. The Swiss are looking more and more gassed as the US has a lot more time and space in the offensive zone.

11:27 p.m. – GOAL! It’s Mazur again. He is left alone on the left side of the night and Slaggert spins and finds him alone for the flick in the net. You see Switzerland slowing down and that’s a bad glitch in the front that results in a goal.

11:23 p.m. – GOAL! It’s the captain as Brock Faber rips a shot from the point through Pasche’s glove. After a pass in the offensive zone, the puck comes back to the point, Faber challenges him, it goes D to D and with Slaggert shielding up front, Pasche can’t get to him. The US takes the lead.

23:22 — Two things that stand out about this Swiss team – they’re not afraid to score, they do it cleanly, and they’re keeping the USA out. They will keep the Americans out, but not in the middle.

11:17 p.m. – GOAL! Switzerland equalizes when Joel Henry beats Kaiden Mbereko with five holes at the breakaway. A turnover by the United States in the Swiss zone results in Henry flying in alone and his move through Mbereko’s legs. Tie game with 11:30 left in 2nd.

11:10 p.m. – GOAL! The power play finally emerges for the Americans as Carter Mazur scores the first goal of the game. A great pass without a look from Samoskevich behind the net to Mazur who cuts in the middle who shoots past Pasche. 1-0 USA with 14:06 in the period.

23:08 — Nicolas Baechler goes to the box while holding Landon Slaggert. USA on their third power play of the game, drawing some good looks early in the period.

23:04 — RIley Duran loads and unloads a nasty wrister that hits Pasche’s glove and hits the bar. No goals from either side yet.

23:02 — USA’s passing game was keen on the power play and it resulted in a one-off effort from Kevin Pasche’s Mackie Samoskevich which was fantastic for the Swiss.

23 o’clock – Just seconds after the second, Brian Zanetti sent the puck over the glass and was told to delay play. After a failed attempt to put the man ahead, USA get their second try early in center picture.

End of 1st period: USA 0, Switzerland 0

22:41 — At the end of the first it is scoreless in Edmonton. A very competitive time on both sides. The Swiss keep the Americans on the outside and don’t allow them to feel comfortable in the offensive zone. At the same time, they create opportunities for themselves at the other end. The USA beat Switzerland 8:7 in this period.

22:39 — The USA now set about their first power play when Joel Henry is called up for a counter check. Sean Behrens is walking down the tunnel as he appeared convulsed from an impact with the boards.

22:31 — The best chance for the power play goes to the USA as Red Savage goes down on a shorthanded breakaway. He faked the shot and pulled it to a backhand but it looks like he missed by wide. Another failed power play for the Swiss.

22:29 — Switzerland are heading for their first power play when Logan Cooley is called up for a high-stick. In the power play against Sweden, the Swiss failed to score despite several chances, which in the end played a major role in the one-goal defeat.

22:19 — It’s clear early on that Switzerland is a much better team than Germany, especially in their own zone. A very competitive eight minutes early with both teams having chances. Switzerland doesn’t allow the US to settle in the offensive zone and move the puck. They are quick and clever in their attempts to disrupt games and found success early on.

foreplay

21 clock – The USA play mostly with the same formation as against Germany. The only change is on the blue line as Sean Behrens will dress and Jack Peart takes his seat for Thursday night’s competition.
