Vector Sport Confirm First Two 2023 FIA WEC LMP2 Drivers
Vector Sport has confirmed the first two drivers in its LMP2 line-up for the #10 ORECA-07 Gibson entry in FIA WEC 2023.
Gabriel Aubry comes to the team with solid, race-bred experience, with a second place finish in the 2018-19 WEC season and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (both LMP2) as highlights of a successful sports car career to date. The 24-year-old has worked with several teams in endurance racing and his knowledge and familiarity with the ORECA will be invaluable in the 2023 team’s line-up.
At his side is Matthias Kaiser from Liechtenstein, who is moving to the world stage after two years in the European Le Mans Series, most recently at Muehlner Motorsport in 2022. The 2019 Ultimate Cup Series Challenge proto-LMP3 champion has made steady and good progress up the endurance racing ladder in just six years of competition and is now making the move to the WEC with Vector Sport.
This will be the UK-based team’s second season in the WEC and the LMP2 campaign will run in parallel with the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 6 LMH Competizione Hypercar testing and development program – a program resulting from the partnership between Vector Sport and the Italian manufacturer emerged.
Gary Holland, Vector Sport Team Principal, said of the two driver signings: “We are very pleased to welcome Gabi and Matthias to the team. We had a strong pre-season and are really looking forward to the prologue and the race at Sebring. We are confident that their individual qualities, drive and determination will help us continue to make a lasting impression in what we know will be a competitive season.”
Although only a short time elapsed between the return of the WEC 2022 cargo to the teams and the departure again for sea freight to the USA, Vector Sport has completed a productive and intensive test program in both Portugal and France. The new drivers will be on 11./12. March will be reunited with their 2023 car for The Prologue at Sebring.
Gabriel Aubry: “I am very happy to start my 6th WEC season and my 5th in the LMP2 class with Vector. I started my endurance career in 2017 with Gary and a lot of the people here at Vector. After a couple of difficult seasons, I’m really trying to rebuild with the support of the guys here. Everything is looking good to play at the highest level this season and I can’t wait to be at Sebring.”
Matthias Kaiser: “I am really looking forward to taking this step into the WEC together with Gabi and the whole Vector Sport crew. After a season in LMP2 in the ELMS, I look forward to further expanding my experience in a new championship and continuing to work towards an exciting and successful season. There is great competition in the LMP2 space and it’s sure to be an exciting year!”
