Vondrousova vs Jabeur LIVE! Wimbledon 2023 final latest result and reaction from Centre Court

Vondrousova vs Jabeur LIVE!

Marketa Vondrousova defeated favourite Ons Jabeur in straight sets to make history as the first unseeded women’s singles champion at Wimbledon.

There have been a string of surprise slam winners in a period of flux for the women’s game but Wimbledon had been the exception until now, with Czech Vondrousova taking advantage of a nervous performance from Jabeur to claim a 6-4 6-4 victory. The irony is it comes at a time when a new big three comprising of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and last year’s Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina have established themselves at the top of the game.

After receiving the trophy, Vondrousova said: “I don’t know what’s happening now. Ons, congratulations, you’re such an inspiration for all of us, I hope you are going to win one day. After everything I’ve been through – I had a cast on this time last year – and now I can’t believe I’m holding this trophy.”

Vondrousova has big plans for her celebrations – says that her coach promised to get a tattoo if she won the title.

Doesn’t sound like he’ll be getting off that bet either, Vondrousova reveals she intends on getting that done tomorrow!

Massive ovation for Jabeur as she collects her runners-up trophy, the Tunisian breaking down in tears.

“This is very, very tough,” she says. “I’m going to look ugly in the photos.

“This is the most painful loss of my career. Congratulations to Marketa and her team. You’re an amazing player, I know you’ve had a lot of injuries and I’m very happy for you.

“It’s going to be a tough day today for me. I’m not going to give up, I’m going to come back stronger.

“I promise I’ll come back one day and win this tournament.”

15:34 , Matt Verri

A couple of minutes of pretty much complete silence, as we wait for the presentation. Centre Court stunned, Jabeur spent most of that time on her seat just staring at the floor. A third Grand Slam final has ended in defeat.

The crowd were right behind Jabeur all afternoon, but they could not get her going. A really tight display from the Tunisian, so many errors. Will be such a difficult defeat for her to take.

Incredible!

GAME, SET AND MATCH!

15:28 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 6-4 Jabeur

Here we go then. Vondrousova on the verge of a Grand Slam title.

15-0, Jabeur with a really poor backhand. And the Tunisian then can’t clear the net as Vondrousova moves forward, 30-0. Three match points! Jabeur on the run, sends the forehand long.

Everyone calm down – double fault. One down, two to go.

VONDROUSOVA IS THE WIMBLEDON CHAMPION! Volley at the net and she drops to the floor in celebration.

Vondrousova breaks!

15:24 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 *5-4 Jabeur

Forehand low into the net from Jabeur, 15-30 and real pressure on the Tunisian once again. If she gets broken here, Vondrousova will serve for the title.

That is wild… drags the forehand a long way out and Vondrousova has a break point!

BROKEN! Another forehand into the net and Jabeur is broken. Over to Vondrousova…

Vondrousova solid again

15:21 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 4-4* Jabeur

A third double fault from Vondrousova, but makes up for it next point with a flat backhand winner.

Very safe second serve as she looks to avoid any more disasters, but Jabeur hammers the return long and Vondrousova holds.

It’s about to get even more nervy…

Jabeur battles to hold

15:18 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 *3-4 Jabeur

Another tight backhand from Jabeur, unforced error count is now 25. Just the 10 for Vondrousova.

That’s wide too from Jabeur, 15-30 and these are a massive couple of points coming up. Jabeur cannot afford to be broken.

First serve turns up at just the right time, two much-needed free points. Forehand winner to seal the hold, that’s a big hold for Jabeur. Back in front in this set.

Level in the second set!

15:15 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 3-3* Jabeur

We’ve gone back to the part where Jabeur’s unforced error count rises. Rapidly.

Double fault from Vondrousova helps the Tunisian – she’s very fortunate it’s not two in a round. Consecutive lets on the second serve, but Jabeur then does superbly with the volley at the net. 30-30.

Challenge from Jabeur, as her backhand is called out. It was, just about. And there’s the hold, Vondrousova has levelled this second set up!

She’s three games away from the Wimbledon title..

Back on serve!

15:10 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 *2-3 Jabeur

This is familiar, Jabeur immediately under pressure after getting the break. Nets the forehand, 0-30.

That’s too good though, backhand down the line from Jabeur, big shot on a big point. Vondrousova then nets her attempt at a drop shot, 30-30.

Break point! Vondrousova this time dominating the rally, Jabeur unable to catch up with the backhand. And Vondrousova breaks back! Of course she does – this crazy final continues.

Jabeur breaks!

15:06 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 1-3* Jabeur

Not a great decision from Vondrousova, lets the slice from Jabeur go and watches in horror as it lands on the baseline.

Jabeur a different player now, forehand works Vondrousova around the court and eventually forces the error. 15-30. Great response from Vondrousova, gets to the drop shot and makes the backhand.

That’s long though, break point and a chance for Jabeur to take control of the second set.

Taken! Vondrousova just about catches the line with a forehand, but the one that follows is out. Jabeur a break up.

Momentum swing…

15:02 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 *1-2 Jabeur

So much more confidence from Jabeur now. That backhand pass in the last game has turned things around completely.

Vondrousova this time with the loose shot, 40-0 and Jabeur is motoring to a hold. She gets it to love, Vondrousova already walking to her chair as the forehand crosscourt from Jabeur flashes past her.

Jabeur breaks back!

14:59 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 1-1* Jabeur

Jabeur cannot get the ball back in play. Vondrousova serving really well, but the Tunisian is now up to 20 unforced errors in the match.

Better from Jabeur, deep return and Vondrousova unable to respond with the backhand. Still a lot of work to do for Jabeur, 40-15. Not quite so much now, as she makes a brilliant backhand pass. Will that get her going again?

Here we go, forehand winner and she drags it back to deuce from 40-0 down. Double fault – break point! It’s saved though, serve out wide from Vondrousova is good enough. Back to deuce.

Another break point coming up, Jabeur’s forehand has suddenly returned. And she takes it! Great point, Jabeur takes it with a swinging volley and we are back on serve!

Vondrousova a set and a break up!

14:54 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 *1-0 Jabeur

Hmmm… simple volley into the net from Jabeur. Not the start to the set she was looking forward. She then drops her head in disgust as the backhand flies long, 0-30 and under pressure immediately. Huge roar from Centre Court, crowd trying to get her going.

Jabeur gets herself back into the game, but the forehand into the tramlines gives Vondrousova a break point!

Which she takes! Or rather is given, awful forehand into the net from Jabeur, who looks completely lost. She’s a set and a break down.

14:51 , Matt Verri

Jabeur with 15 unforced errors in the set, compared to six from Vondrousova. Only 44% on first serve too, the Tunisian. Needs a swift improvement.

She’s back from that break, ready to serve first in the second set.

SET VONDROUSOVA!

14:48 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 6-4 Jabeur

Unforced error count from Jabeur continues to climb – more than double Vondrousova’s tally.

Centre Court rallies behind Jabeur, as she nets the return. 30-0, Vondrousova a couple of points away from taking this first set.

Three set points! Another really poor return, and again. That one seals the set for Vondrousova!

Wow. No surprise to see Jabeur marching straight off court, she needs to quickly reset. Completely fell away those last couple of games.

Vondrousova breaks!

14:45 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova *5-4 Jabeur

Lovely shot, backhand crosscourt from Jabeur and her box are on their feet in response. Nobody moves next point, slapped into the net by Jabeur and she needs to be careful at 15-30.

Trouble now – two break points! She had complete control of the point, but the overhead at the net is a poor one.

Broken! Backhand into the net and Vondrousova, out of nowhere, will serve for the set. Such huge swings from Jabeur, plenty of good in there but no consistency.

Nothing to split them

14:42 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 4-4* Jabeur

Opportunity for Jabeur to get to 0-30, second serve sat up to be hit but the forehand flies out.

Better game from Vondrousova though, we could be on track for a rare hold… and there it is. Jabeur with a couple more loose returns and Vondrousova has levelled the set up at 4-4.

Back on serve

14:38 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova *3-4 Jabeur

Anything you can do…

Vondrousova hammers a backhand return down the line and all of a sudden she has three break points!

She needs just one! Gets to the drop shot, flicks it brilliantly for a clean winner and we are immediately back on serve. Wild first set.

Jabeur breaks again!

14:36 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 2-4* Jabeur

Vondrousova turns to the serve and volley, might not do so again in a hurry. Backhand pass from Jabeur forces the error, 0-30 and a chance.

Three break points! Slice into the net from Vondrousova, this game has got away from her in barely a minute.

And it’s a break to love! Wild forehand from Vondrousova and Jabeur once again has control of the opening set.

Jabeur edges in front again

14:33 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova *2-3 Jabeur

Jabeur has got 37% of her first serves in so far, needs that to improve markedly. Vondrousova at 80%.

There we go, puff of chalk as the ace catches the line. First one of the match, Jabeur races into a 40-0 lead.

Smile on Vondrousova’s face, as she runs down the drop shot and sends it down the line to wrong-foot Jabeur, but that only briefly extends the game. Forehand winner from Jabeur and it’s a comfortable hold.

Vondrousova hangs tough

14:30 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 2-2* Jabeur

Really good from Vondrousova, reads the drop well. Flicks it back, and keeps her nerve at the net to put the swinging volley away.

And there’s the hold – slice is a poor one from Jabeur. That’s a big, big hold for Vondrousova to level this set up.

14:29 , Matt Verri

Jabeur punches her thigh, as the latest forehand fails to clear the net. All become a bit sloppy from the Tunisian since that early break.

That’s much better though, still firmly in this game. A long exchange of slices, ended as Jabeur powers a backhand down the line. 30-30.

Break point! Slice from Vondrousova low into the net, neither player looking particularly comfortable on serve in the first 20 minutes or so of this final. Jabeur can’t take it – gets to the drop shot easily, tries to drop it about an inch over the net, but catches the tape. And another break point goes, Jabeur tries the backhand pass but doesn’t make it.

Number three to come! Backhand down the line can’t miss all of a sudden for Jabeur. Again it’s saved, first-serve return floats into the tramlines.

Fourth time lucky? Jabeur dominating the longer rallies, Vondrousova struggling to stay with her. But once more, the return is missed. Back to deuce.

Back on serve!

14:20 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova *1-2 Jabeur

Forehand flies long from Jabeur, immediately points at the grass. Always good to have something to blame. Vondrousova could do with an excuse, forehand too often being dumped into the net. Jabeur getting plenty of very cheap points.

Nothing wrong with that one though, deep return and Jabeur can’t do anything with it – deuce. And now a break point, Jabeur nets the forehand this time.

Saved! Brilliantly saved too. Jabeur dominating the rally, working Vondrousova around the court and then puts away the swinging volley confidently.

Another break point coming up though, Jabeur goes for the backhand down the line and doesn’t make it. Taken – another unforced error from Jabeur and she’s gifted the break back.

Jabeur breaks!

14:14 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova 0-2* Jabeur

Good from Jabeur, forehand punching through the Vondrousova defences at the moment. She puts the overhead away at the net, chance at 15-30 to put some pressure on the serve.

Two break points! Vondrousova on the stretch floats the ball beyond the baseline.

One saved, timely first serve. But Jabeur breaks! Forehand into the net and it’s a perfect start for the sixth seed.

Jabeur earns opening hold

14:11 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova *0-1 Jabeur

Some start from Vondrousova, her lob floats perfectly over Jabeur and clips the baseline for the first point of the match.

Jabeur then unhappy that they’re replaying a point, after a successful challenge shows the ball did clip the line. Doesn’t matter though, she wins that point and a first serve down the T then seals an opening hold. Jabeur up and running.

Jabeur to serve

14:06 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova won the toss, she’s opted to receive first and try and put some early pressure on the Jabeur serve.

Time to get the Wimbledon final up and running!

Here we go!

14:01 , Matt Verri

Jabeur out first, swiftly followed by Vondrousova. Fairly gloomy at the moment under the Centre Court roof.

Going to be a brilliant atmosphere, most of the crowd expected to be firmly behind Jabeur.

Montage time!

13:54 , Matt Verri

Five minutes to go, players are about to start making their walk to the court.

Wouldn’t be a big sporting occasion without a montage, you’re all thinking. Well, you’re in luck.

Not long to go!

13:47 , Matt Verri

Players will be out onto Centre Court in the next 15 minutes or so.

The roof remains shut, with it still very windy around Wimbledon. Vondrousova had her practice session outside this morning in the wind, while Jabeur was under the Centre Court roof.

Think both will be happy enough if they avoid having to contend with the elements this afternoon.

Third time lucky?

13:39 , Matt Verri

Ons Jabeur is hoping she can finally clear the Grand Slam hurdle this afternoon, insisting that she still firmly believes her time will come after finishing as runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

“Yeah, last year was my first final of a Grand Slam,” Jabeur said after beating Sabelanka in the semi-finals. “Definitely getting closer to winning the Grand Slam that I always wished.

“I would say I always believed. But sometimes you would question and doubt it if it’s going to happen, if it’s ever going to happen. Being in the last stages, I think it does help you believe more.

“For me, I’m going to learn a lot from not only Wimbledon’s final but also US Open final, and give it my best. Maybe this year was all about trying two times and getting it right the third time. So let’s see.”

Good memories for Vondrousova

13:33 , Matt Verri

Vondrousova has already beaten Jabeur twice this year.

The 24-year-old secured a 6-1 5-7 6-1 victory over Jabeur in the second round of the Australian Open, before also coming out on top at Indian Wells two months later.

Jabeur has beaten Vondrousova on grass though, a 6-3 7-6 win at Eastbourne in 2021.

Vondrousova: I’m a different person

13:26 , Matt Verri

Marketa Vondrousova believes her experience of playing in a Grand Slam final four years ago will help her this afternoon.

She managed just four games when losing to Ash Barty in the French Open final, but Vondrousova is confident she is in a better position this time.

“I think it can definitely help in tough moments,” Vondrousva said of that defeat.

“Also, like, I’ve been through it. Once I was very young, so I think it was just too much for me back then. Yeah, I think this can help you also on the way. You know what to do. You know you have to have good people around you.

“Definitely it can help. I mean, I’m a bit older now also. Yeah, I think I’m a bit different person. Yeah, I’m just very happy to be through this again.”

Finally over the line?

13:11 , Matt Verri

A third Grand Slam final for Ons Jabeur this afternoon – will it be a first title?

She was beaten in three sets by Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon last year, before losing in straight sets to Iga Swiatek just a couple of months later in the US Open final.

Jabeur is now back on the biggest stage again, looking to take that final step. She’s been incredibly popular all fortnight, expect Centre Court to be firmly behind the sixth seed.

Weather update

12:55 , Matt Verri

After a day of rain yesterday, it’s much better at Wimbledon today.

The sun is almost out, but the concern today is the wind. It should stay dry, but gusts of up to 50mph could have had a big impact throughout the afternoon. For now, the Centre Court roof is closed.

Vondrousova looks to deny Jabeur

12:45 , Matt Verri

It could reasonably be argued that Ons Jabeur had a relatively easy draw at last year’s Wimbledon, not so in 2023.

In each of the last four rounds she has faced a four-time grand slam champion in Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Petra Kvitova and Bianca Andreescu, at least three of which were reasonable picks to win the tournament at the start of it a fortnight ago. And only one of those matches has not gone the distance.

And yet the ‘Minister for Happiness’ finds herself once again back in the final against a player who could barely have been anyone’s pick to make it to the latter stages in London.

The unexpectedness of Marketa Vondrousova’s run is such that not even her husband, Stepan, decided to attend the tournament. Instead, the couple agreed that he would stay at their home in Prague and work.

On Friday, he flew into London with Vondrousova’s sister while the couple’s cat, Frankie, is now in the hands of the cat sitter ahead of her second Grand Slam final.

Prediction

12:36 , Matt Verri

Last year was incredibly painful for Jabeur, having taken the final set in the final before the match slipped away from her.

She will surely be better for it though, and she has had to be at her battling best this week to come from behind against Rybakina and Sabalenka.

Vondrousova has done superbly to reach the final, with impressive wins over Pegula and Svitolina, but Jabeur looks to have enough for a first Grand Slam title.

Jabeur to win – straight sets.

Some Centre Court practice

12:27 , Matt Verri

About an hour and a half to go until the players walk out onto Centre Court – Ons Jabeur is already there.

She’s currently having a practice session with her team on court, watched by a few people already in their seats.

All very serious so far from the ‘Minister of Happiness’…
