What you should know

After two away games, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are returning home. Their week off will conclude when they meet with the UTEP Miners at Joe Aillet Stadium on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET. The matchup is expected to be tight as Louisiana Tech goes out as the favorite by just 2.5 points.

The odds makers predicted tough competition for the Bulldogs two weeks ago, and boy were they right. They suffered a bitter 38-14 loss to the South Alabama Jaguars. Louisiana Tech ended the third quarter down 31-7, which was just too much to recover from. QB Parker McNeil had a memorable game, but not in the way one would like to remember: he threw four interceptions despite two touchdowns.

UTEP chose to defend against themselves last week, but the side still prevailed despite their 84 penalties. They got past the Charlotte 49ers by less than a touchdown to go 41-35. UTEP QB Gavin Hardison worked as he passed on 14 tries for three TDs and 173 yards while picking up an additional 50 yards on the ground. Topping the highlight reel was Hardison’s 58-yard TD bomb against WR Tyrin Smith in the third quarter.

UTEP’s defense was also present as they got past Charlotte’s offensive line to sack the QB five times for a total loss of 40 yards. In the lead was DE Jadrian Taylor with his two sacks. Taylor now has four sacks this season.

The Bulldogs are now at 1-3 while the Miners are at 3-3. Two numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: Louisiana Tech comes in and boasts the 34th most passing yards per game in the nation with 278.5. But UTEP ranks 29th nationwide for yards allowed per game, averaging just 188.5. We’ll see which of these strengths – offensive or defensive – will prevail.
