Weber State football: McMillan, Garrett latest to enter names in transfer portal | News, Sports, Jobs
Though it took until the spring portal, it was perhaps foolish to expect Weber State Football to be immune to transfers following the loss of nine-year head coach Jay Hill.
Junior running back Dontae McMillan announced Tuesday that he is putting his name on the transfer portal after four seasons at Weber State.
McMillan, a Seattle native, has led WSU in rushing yards for each of the past two seasons (801 yards and six touchdowns in 2022, 475 yards in 2021).
Softening the blow is explosive junior Damon Bankston (709 yards, eight touchdowns last season) and healthy senior Kris Jackson (796 career yards, 21 touchdowns). Adrian Cormier, Steven Shoats-Thomas and new rookie Major Givens are among those vying for game time.
McMillan is one of four starters to leave the program since the end of the 2022 season. Senior cornerback Kam Garrett is another significant loss; He announced he would be moving last week. Garrett was a freshman starter in 2019 and has 75 total tackles and 14 pass breakups in 37 career games.
All-American cornerback Eddie Heckard was the first to leave a few months ago. Perennial cornerback starters Maxwell Anderson and Marque Collins are still returning. Jalon Rock and Abraham Williams appear to be next to join the squad as Heckard and Garrett have now gone Godfather along with Toddrick Dixon and Montae.
Heckard and Rotations DE starter Nuu Sellesin each switched to BYU before the Spring Ball. Offensive lineman Jake Eichorn, who became a starter in the latter half of the 2022 season, joined the transfer portal at the end of spring camp and has since committed to BYU.
Less frequent contributors such as linebacker Kyden Bailey and offense lineman Chinonso Opara have also announced they are leaving the program.
Three FBS transfers have reported on social media that they received offers from head coach Mickey Mental and his staff in the spring to help the transfer portal as it takes away.
Liberty final defender Rashad Whitehead is one; Whitehead appeared in four games in two seasons at Liberty and was expected to have three seasons left. Troy redshirt freshman offensive lineman Matthew Johnson and Utah redshirt freshman OL transfer Tyler Knaak also reported on WSU offers.
