The draft lottery is always an important part of the drafting process, but this year the #1 carries more weight than ever.

How does the NHL Draft Lottery work?
The 16 teams that fail to make the playoffs will be assigned a odds percentage based on where they finished in the standings. The lower the team, the higher their chances of getting the top pick.
The NHL introduced some new changes to the lottery’s rules a few seasons ago that limit how far up certain teams can go.
There are two draws in the draft lottery: one for number 1 and one for number 2. After that, the order is determined by where the teams finished the season.
This is a change from three draws in the past for the top three picks.
One of the two new rules introduced in the 2022 draft is that teams cannot move up more than 10 spots if they win any of the lottery draws. So which teams are placed between #12-16 can not choose #1.
The other is that teams cannot win the lottery more than twice in five years. Any wins in the lottery prior to 2022 do not count towards this total, so 2022 marks the beginning of each team’s five-year period.
For example, if Canadians were to win the draft lottery again this year, they would not be eligible to receive the No. 1 again until 2027, having received the top pick in 2022 and 2023.
After the first two picks have been determined, the rest of the field will be ranked in order of their placing in the overall standings. This ensures that the team with the worst record cannot fall further than third place.
