Oh, are we talking about teams?

On Wednesday, the PGA Tour made some drastic changes to its bottom line and payouts for players coming next year. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods do more than that

In partnership with the PGA Tour, TGL, a technology-based golf league founded by Woods and McIlroy and their joint venture TMRW Sports, introduces another new facet to the game of golf.

Played in a purpose-built area, TGL will face off against two teams of three in a technique-based tournament that will begin in just a few years.

McIlroy and Woods are the first two golfers planning to play in the Splitter League, with more expected to join soon.

While it doesn’t appear to be a direct competitor to LIV Golf, the technology-based approach to golf certainly has the future in mind.

Here’s what we know:

What is TGL?

TGL (unclear what the initials stand for) is an emerging tech-based golf league due to launch in a few years.

In partnership with the PGA Tour, the league, founded by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, pits two teams against each other in a technology-based arena. There will be six teams with three PGA Tour golfers per team.

The arena is “a data-rich, virtual course with a tech-infused short-game complex” and also offers a “green fan experience.” Here’s a look at what you can expect:

It’s unclear how matches, tournaments or rules will play out, but the reveal video seems to indicate they’re capped at two hours.

From TGL official website:

The league starts with six teams, each consisting of 3 PGA TOUR players. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are the first two golfers to choose to compete.

The purpose-built arena will combine a data-rich virtual course with a state-of-the-art short-game complex. TGL will offer a high-tech, high-energy fan experience where fans sit in the open.

The first TGL season begins in January 2024 with a 15-game regular season followed by playoffs and a league game.

According to McIlroy, the tour will be “additional and complementary” to the PGA Tour.

When does TGL start?

TGL starts in January 2024 with a 15-game regular season. There are also playoffs and a championship game.

Given that games are played on Mondays, it’s safe to assume they’ll start after the NFL’s regular season ends.

Who plays in TGL?

As of now, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are the two announced golfers for TGL. More are expected to be announced in the coming months.
