The first episode of “Hard Knocks” impressively set the theme for this year’s Detroit Lions.
Sophomore coach Dan Campbell, who had a season leading Detroit to a 3-13-1 record, described this year’s team with Metallica lyrics. He wants this team to be the freight train at the end of a dark tunnel:
“The last thing I’m going to say is this: there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. There is no light,” he said. “There’s a Metallica song, ‘No Leaf Clover,’ and it says, man, when it comes to the comforting light at the end of your tunnel, there’s only a freight train coming your way.
“If you see a (power) light, it’s just a freight train. Head down and get to work. This is about to be fun, man. This is going to be fun.”

This sets the course of action for this team. Campbell’s ability to get his team to embrace a tough, grim, team-first philosophy has people eyeing the Lions as a potential sleeper team in 2022.
Last but not least, the team bought into running back Jamaal Williams delivering an impassioned speech that brought him to tears.
“It wasn’t last year, we’re not,” Williams said. “We can do it. Have some heart. I’m getting emotional about it. I’m about to cry because I care for you all.
“Don’t think these tears are coming from a weak mind,” Williams wrote. “I will run over you crying.”

Those were the highlights of the opening episode – along with a rendition of “Billie Jean” by Aidan Hutchinson, the #2 overall. So what will Episode 2 hold in store?
