Day 1 of World Juniors 2022 is finally here. After the tournament was canceled after three days of competition in December due to COVID, the tournament will take place again in August and the USA will start with a matchup against Germany.
The United States enter the tournament as reigning champions. The Americans defeated Canada in the 2021 gold medal game to win their sixth World Junior Championships gold and have never won back-to-back World Juniors.
While the thought of a repeat is always there, only four players from that championship roster will wear the red, white and blue in Edmonton. USA head coach Nate Leamon stressed the importance of preparation with the lads they have to succeed in 2022.
“I think it’s always out there, over your head and in the cloud,” Leaman said of a replay as the back-to-back champion. “But we didn’t win last year by talking about it every day. We won the gold medal by preparing and working and that’s what we’re focusing on now. We will play well in the tournament if we prepare well for the tournament. and that’s really our focus.”
Germany finished sixth at World Juniors 2021, falling to Russia in the quarterfinals. This team had an exceptional top line from Tim Stützle, JJ Peterka and Florian Elias, but none will be in Edmonton for this go-around. Germany will rely on defenders like Luca Münzenberger, Maximilian Glötzl and striker Alexander Blank to lead the team.
