When is Arsenal vs Manchester City? All you need to know about Premier League title showdown

Due to the special circumstances of this Premier League season, the title race has so far taken place at a distance.

All that will change this week when Arsenal host Manchester City in a rearranged game.

It is the first time Mikel Arteta’s leaders have faced reigning champions Pep Guardiola in La Liga this season, with the game being postponed ahead of the scheduled October 19 date.

This was a follow-up to the Gunners’ Europa League game against PSV, which was canceled in September following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. That game was moved into the October weekday slot originally reserved for City play, and the mid-season World Cup meant a quick move wasn’t possible.

But the wait for Arsenal vs Manchester City and the way the season has unfolded in England since last autumn mean the stakes couldn’t be higher as the Gunners seek their first title since 2003/04 and Guardiola’s Men are attempting to win three titles in a row – a feat previously only accomplished by Manchester United in the Premier League era.

Arsenal vs Man City title race in Premier League

Despite faltering by a point in their last two Premier League games, Arsenal still hold a three-point lead over City with a game in hand.

If Arsenal wins…

A win for Arteta’s side would undoubtedly feel like a big step towards glory. They would be six points clear of a City team that has been in so-so form since the World Cup.

The Gunners would have a chance to drive the advantage home when their game comes at home against Everton about two weeks later, although the win for Sean Dyche’s team when they met at Goodison Park in early February gives an indication of that cession.

If Man City wins…

City would sit top of the table in terms of goal difference and another game against Arsenal would come on their own patch.

Arsenal’s game in hand would still be of great concern to the conversation, but City not in their best form and returning to the top of the table from an off-field storm would feel like an ominous show of force.

In case of a tie…

You would never admit it but you would expect old friends Arteta and Guardiola to sign for this scenario given the chance. City would avoid falling too far behind and Arsenal would keep the fate of the title in their own hands with 15 and 16 league games respectively remaining.

Arsenal vs Manchester City in 2023

Arsenal and City have met before this calendar year, with Nathan Ake scoring the only goal as the Blues prevailed 1-0 in a FA Cup fourth round draw on January 27.

Arteta made more changes to his first starting XI than Guardiola for the game and Arsenal did well, creating the better chances in the first half before Dutch defender Ake capped off a superb display, effectively tying down Bukayo Saka.

The second leg of the league at Etihad Stadium takes place on Wednesday 26 April. The impact there could be absolutely colossal as each team has just five Premier League games left after the Manchester clash.

There is no prospect of more games between the teams in European competition this season as City play in the Champions League and Arsenal in the Europa League.

Arsenal vs Manchester City History

Arsenal and City have played each other a total of 206 times, with the Gunners victorious in the historic neck-and-neck race 98-63. There were 45 draws.

However, City have dominated the game in recent years and have had six straight wins against Arsenal since the north London side prevailed in the 2020 FA Cup semi-finals.

That victory at a behind-closed-doors Wembley during the coronavirus pandemic brought a streak of seven straight wins at City.

They last have to go back to December 2015 when Arsenal won a Premier League game against City, with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud scoring the goals before Yaya Toure pulled one back for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

In 13 Premier League games since then, City have won 11 – including each of the last 10 – and drawn two.
