Where is Patrick Mahomes from? Hometown, college & more to know about Chiefs star’s roots

Patrick Mahomes has cemented his status as one of the most dominant players in the NFL today. With the possibility of earning his second championship ring when he and the Chiefs take on the Eagles in Super Bowl 57, there’s little doubt about it.

Long before Mahomes chopped up NFL defenses, however, he diced the state of Texas in a legendary high school football career. Mahome’s dominance followed him from high school to college and later to the NFL.

The stars of the night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas – and that includes those to come. Here’s what you should know about Mahomes’ hometown.

Where is Patrick Mahome’s hometown?

Mahomes was born on September 17, 1995 in Tyler, Texas. Mahomes’ father, Patrick, was also from Texas. Mahomes attended Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas, about 20 minutes from Tyler.

While at Whitehouse, Mahomes played basketball, baseball, and football. In his senior year, he threw for a 16-strikeout no-hitter in baseball while the Wildcats QB for 4,619 yards, 948 rushing yards, 50 passing touchdowns and an additional 15 rushing touchdowns.

Tyler is about an hour and a half east of Dallas, Texas. As such, Mahomes grew up a big, big fan of Jerry’s boys:

“I was more [a fan of] Romo,” Mahomes said of the Cowboys QB that caught his eye. “Aikman was right in front of me. So I have a lot of close playoff games but not a lot of wins. Growing up, I was still a die-hard Cowboys fan.”

Where did Patrick Mahomes go to college?

Mahomes attended Texas Tech University, which he attended between 2014 and 2016. When he left high school, he was somewhat surprisingly named a three-star recruit, prompting minimal college interest.

He was offered by Rice, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State but ultimately signed to Texas Tech, where Kliff Kingsbury was the team’s head coach. Kingsbury was in his second season as the team’s head coach.

Mahomes was a dual-sport athlete while at Texas Tech who also fielded for the Red Raiders baseball team. After his sophomore season, he quit playing baseball to focus solely on football going into his junior season.

Mahomes started in seven games of his true freshman season with Davis Webb dealing with injuries and was named the starter for his sophomore and junior seasons on Kliff Kingsbury’s offense.

In addition to smashing numbers at the school – which led the nation in passing yards in 2016 – he also earned a number of trophies:

  • 2016 Sammy Baugh Award, given to the nation’s best passer;
  • Second Team All Big-12, 2016.
