Who is Kyle Sloter? NFL preseason star, All-USFL QB looks to prove himself with XFL’s Renegades

If you’re a spring football fan, then the name Kyle Sloter probably rings a bell. Sloter spent the last season in the USFL with the New Orleans Breakers; This year he brought his talent to the XFL as a starting quarterback for Bob Stoops’ Arlington Renegades.

Sloter was one of the USFL’s best quarterbacks last season after bouncing around with various teams in the NFL.

His play in the USFL gave him a chance with the Jaguars in the preseason, but he didn’t make the practice squad or the 53-man roster. The 28-year-old will now look to show he should still get a shot in the NFL.

Who is Kyle Sloter?

Sloter was one of 15 quarterbacks drafted to XFL teams in November prior to the first XFL draft. The 6-5, 218-pounder comes to the league with a ton of NFL and USFL experience.

He spent his undergraduate years at Southern Mississippi and Northern Colorado Universities.

Sloter’s standout play in Northern Colorado in 2016 helped him gain a foothold with the Broncos in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. He didn’t make the final 53-man list, but his preseason play helped him create chances later on.

Sloter finally got a chance to show what he could do as a full-time pro quarterback with the Breakers last season. He completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 1,799 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Where did Kyle Sloter go to college?

Sloter played in southern Mississippi and northern Colorado. At Southern Miss (2012-14), he played 13 games as a wide receiver and recorded seven receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown. He moved to Northern Colorado in 2015, where he served as a receiver and backup quarterback. He also played on special teams.

In 2016, Sloter got a chance to play quarterback after starter Jason Knipp went down with an injury. He completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,665 yards, a school record of 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was also a factor on the ground, producing 203 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Sloter wasn’t drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he did use his winning days to an opportunity with the Broncos. After the draft, he signed with Denver, beginning his now year-long NFL search.

Kyle Sloter NFL Stats

Though he’s spent time with multiple teams, Sloter has never snapped an NFL regular-season snap. The last time Sloter played in the NFL was in the 2022 Hall of Fame game for the Jaguars vs. the Raiders. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Sloter has played well regardless of team in the NFL preseason, but it hasn’t translated into a league backup job.

Sloter was one of the stars of the USFL last season when he helped lead the Breakers to the playoffs. He completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 1,798 yards, nine touchdowns with 11 interceptions in nine games.

He had numerous injuries (hand, knee, groin) during the season and had to miss a game.

And despite being second in the league in interceptions, Sloter was named to the All-USFL team.
