Who is Logan Sargeant? Career and progress as latest Formula One star from USA prepares for debut season

After a successful four-year stint between the Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships, American Logan Sargeant is looking to put his country back on the map when he joins Williams for the upcoming 2023 F1 season.

The first American driver in the sport since Alexander Rossi – who drove five races for the Manor Marussia F1 Team in 2015 – Sargeant is looking to make an immediate impression after finishing fourth in F2 last season, winning two races.

However, his progress will be tested by his new Williams team, as the British team finished bottom in the Constructors’ Championship last season despite the efforts of Alex Albon, Sargeant’s new team-mate.

Who is Logan Sargeant?

Born on New Year’s Eve 2000 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Sargeant is the youngest American driver to compete in Formula One and the first since Alexander Rossi in 2015.

He will drive for the British team Williams in the 2023 Formula 1 season and began his racing career in karting at the age of just eight.

Since then, Sargeant has risen rapidly through the world of motorsport, competing in both F3 and F2 in recent years and having announced plans to join the Williams Driver Academy as early as October 2021.

That doesn’t always pave the way for a move to the driver’s seat in F1, but his consistency and improvement have forced his team to give him a spot for the upcoming 2023 season.

On a family level, he is the vexation of professional stock car racer Dalton Sargeant and also the nephew of Harry Sargeant III, an American billionaire and energy tycoon.

In a recent call to the press, Sargeant spoke about his roots and how important it is for the sport to have another American rider join the ranks.

“Honestly, to be the first American in a while is such a privilege,” Sargeant said at the launch of Williams’ 2023 car, before adding, “It’s a great opportunity to represent my country to the best of my ability. Three home – to have a Grand Prix.” is something many, if anyone, has never been able to say, so I look forward to enjoying those moments. I just see it as a privilege and an honor.”

Logan Sargeant Career Highlights and Progress

In karting, Sargeant competed across the States before heading to Europe to compete in the ROK Cup International Final, the Trofeo Delle Industrie and the WSK Euro Series – prestigious competitions for younger drivers.

Already winning awards in 2015, next came his single-seater debut in the UAE Formula 4 Championship in 2016 with Team Motopark. With 15 podiums in 18 races this season, the American has quickly adapted to the format, showing off his lightning fast pace and quick decision making.

He made his F3 debut in 2019, winning his first race at Silverstone before adding a second at Spa in Belgium. Things were looking rosy in terms of progression, but in 2021 Sargeant had to abandon his move to F2 due to financial reasons and return to F3.

“To be honest, at that point I was 100 percent sure it was dead,” Sargeant told Motorsport.com when discussing this season.

“At that point I just thought I was going towards the LMP or IndyCar track, which I was happy with at the time. It was just my reality at the time. There I felt like those were the only two places I could still turn my head. The F3 seat was just to spend some time and stay in a car and help a team move forward and get a different position for me let’s say. Honestly, I ended up wanting it, everything was very helpful and helped me tremendously. So I’m glad I did all of that.”

Luckily for him, his chance in F2 came at the end of the 2021 season when he competed in two races before claiming a driver’s seat with Carlin for 2022.

The following July, at Silverstone, Sargeant became the first American driver to win an F2 race and after his second win in Austria, Williams made the decision to bring the American into F1 for 2023 after being worthy of the Rookie of the Season title.

Logan Sargeant makes F1 season debut: how will he fare?

It’s hard to say how well Sargeant will do this season, although given Williams’ recent struggles at the track, expectations aren’t too high.

The British team, nine-time constructors’ champions between 1980 and 1997, picked up just eight championship points overall last season – 751 fewer than champions Red Bull – making it any top-10 result for the American in his first season in the sport doing would be bonus.

Therefore, the 22-year-old shouldn’t be put under too much pressure as he will primarily be judged on his performance against team-mate Albon.

However, Albon has a growing reputation in Formula 1 and has previously driven for Red Bull himself, so will prove hard for Sargeant to beat. The British rider has two podiums under his belt and amassed 201 points from 59 starts in the sport. His experience could also help Sargeant find his way around quickly.

Sargeant’s primary goal will be to secure a contract extension as quickly as possible through his performances on both qualifying and race days. That’s likely if he can continue his great start with the team off the track through the Williams Driving Academy.

Former Williams Racing team boss Jost Capito, who has since been replaced by James Vowles for 2023, touched on this when his team officially announced Sargeant’s contract.

He remarked: “We are delighted to officially announce Logan as our driver for next year, having qualified for a super license following the final F2 event of the season in Abu Dhabi. Logan joins Alex to complete our exciting driver line-up for 2023.

“Since joining our Driver Academy in late 2021, Logan has been able to fully integrate into the Grove team in the simulator and more recently on track during the four free practice sessions he has attended. He had a strong rookie season in Formula 2 and we look forward to watching him make the step up in Formula 1. We are here to support this journey with him.”
