Why is Mélodie Daoust not playing for Canada at the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship?

The 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship begins this week, and Canada will begin defending its 2021 gold medal. However, the team has to do without the MVP of last year’s tournament.

Mélodie Daoust is not in the national team squad for this year’s tournament in Denmark. The 30-year-old led the 2021 competition with 12 points in eight games.

Daoust started playing for Canada at U18 level before working her way up to the national team. She has won two Olympic golds, one Olympic silver, one U18 gold, one U18 silver, one World Championship gold and one World Championship bronze medal with the national team.

While it will be a tough loss for Canada, the team have shown they can win without Daoust. She was injured at the 2022 Winter Olympics in February and missed most of the tournament. Canada still won gold.
