Why Sports Have Grown In Popularity Since 2020| The Culture Custodian

If you haven’t been hibernating under a rock for the past two or three years, you know that a certain event happened in 2020 that rocked the world. The global pandemic has forced us to change our actions over many years and we are currently still adapting to the changes.

While all aspects of life were changing during this period, the world of sports was one of the biggest industries hit by the pandemic. Some of the changes were negative at first, with professional sport being put on hold for months. However, after two and a half years, it can be said that sport has gained popularity due to the pandemic. Why is that? Let’s take a look!

The need for movement

The pandemic has shown us that the need to exercise is more important than ever. People were encouraged to get outside and keep fit. It has been cited as one of the best ways to keep yourself healthy and boost your immune system. As a result, we have seen many claims from individuals group task Certifications and create training courses that entire cities can participate in. But we’ve also seen more and more people turn to sport to exercise and stay fit. People would take up running, football, rugby, tennis, cycling – you name it! All of this has been fueled by the pandemic’s emphasis on exercise and fitness.

FOMO

If you are not aware FOMO stands for the fear of missing something. It’s a popular term that refers to the feeling you get when you miss something. When your friends have all gone out but you can’t, you start to experience FOMO. The same applies to sporting events during the peak of the pandemic. We all started getting FOMO because we couldn’t see our favorite teams play anymore. Months went by without anyone kicking a ball and then we had to deal with stadium spectator bans!

Keep in mind that sporting events only allowed spectators back in about a year ago. Before that we sat at home for months and watched games. The built FOMO created a world where everyone was more eager than ever to hit the road and catch live sporting events. Then we were sometimes crowded, so tickets for events were even harder to get. Eventually people were allowed back in to clear the stands – and we saw a massive surge in attendance.

Ultimately, these are the two driving forces for the sporting growth of the last two and a half years. Sport has definitely always been popular, but going indoors has breathed new life into the sports industry. We all felt the urge to play sport as a form of exercise because we understood the importance of staying fit and healthy. Alongside this, years of not being able to properly watch live sports or attend events resulted in tremendous levels of FOMO. Then, when it got more relaxed, we all stormed into the stadiums and wanted to watch our local teams battle it out.
