Why Time Out is Leaping Into the Metaverse – And How to Get Involved

At Time Out, we love sharing cities with you – and we love highlighting the most exciting experiences and communities within them. Therefore, it is natural for us to continue Guide you through the virtual experiences of the rapidly evolving metaverse – and also to take our own first step into the Metaverse by opening a Time Out House in the new virtual community, metropolis worldwhich you can access and explore for yourself starting today.

Just as Time Out exists to unlock the best of great cities like London, New York, Sydney and Tokyo in the physical world, we increasingly want to unlock the burgeoning communities and spaces of the virtual world – so we all know what to embrace and avoid in this evolving space that is merging digital and physical experiences like nothing before.

But what is the metaverse? Fair question – hard and fast definitions are slippery and hard to pin down these days, which is why we’ve put together this handy cheat sheet covering some of the most important questions and definitions.

Author Matthew Ball recently spent over 300 pages defining it in his book The Metaverse and how it will revolutionize everything. Ball summarizes the Metaverse as: “a persistent and interconnected network of 3D virtual worlds that will eventually serve as the gateway to most online experiences and also underpin much of the physical world.”

Time Out is a movement – often referred to as “the next internet” – that we want to join and lead our followers through. As an exciting first step, Time Out has partnered metropolis world, a new Metaverse community allowing users everywhere to explore six entirely virtual new cities. The founders of Metropolis describe it as “a curated 360° universe that connects unique real estate, e-commerce, games, art and experiences that span both the digital and physical worlds”.

Metropolis will ultimately consist of six virtual cities. In the first of these, Celeste, you’ll find the Time Out House, and you can explore over 500 other hand-drawn buildings in Celeste, much like strolling through an art gallery. Soon you’ll also be able to enjoy exclusive experiences within this community, curated by founding citizens such as Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis and Blondish.
