Why Yankees fans booed Luis Severino after latest subpar outing vs. Orioles

Luis Severino’s season hit a new low Thursday night, and Yankees fans let him know about it.

Severino was knocked down for 10 hits and seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings against the Orioles, prolonging a demoralizing streak for the right-hander.

Severino had allowed six hits, including three doubles, in the third inning alone when Aaron Boone came out of the dugout to make the change. Albert Abreu allowed three more runs in the inning, two of which were at Severino’s expense.

A fan base that mocked Aaron Hicks more than a month after his call-up to action didn’t let Severino off the hook. After Gunnar Henderson’s third hit of the night, boos rang out in the Bronx, breaking the camel’s back.

Boos are fairly common at Yankee Stadium, but Thursday night’s reaction wasn’t based on just one start. It’s been a deeply disappointing season for Severino, who looked like himself again after returning from the injured list in May but has been untroubled since early June.

When asked before the game about Severino’s inconsistent season, Boone said he believes the right-hander’s fields are beginning to see some life again, citing a goalless start against Rangers two weeks ago.

Any progress certainly seems moot after Severino’s recent collapse.

Severino’s ERA is 7.38 to nine starts after Thursday night’s implosion against the Orioles. He has conceded seven earned runs in each of his last two starts and has only had two good starts this season. These are the only two games Severino has lasted more than five innings.

Notably, Severino posted a 1.59 ERA in his first two starts of the season since the start of the year on the IL. However, as of early June, he has held a 10.05 ERA in seven appearances.

As long as Severino is healthy, it could be difficult for the Yankees to pull Severino out of the rotation as Nestor Cortes Jr. is still out through injury. The impending return of Carlos Rodon gives the team a bit more flexibility, with Randy Vasquez and Jhony Brito representing the team’s main back-up plans should Severino continue to struggle or be injured.

This rough patch couldn’t come at a worse time for Severino as he is expected to become a free agent post-season.

Although Severino has a long injury history, a strong contract year could have positioned him as one of the top free-agent pitchers alongside Blake Snell and Aaron Nola. At this rate, Severino could be on his way to a proving deal in the open market as the ugly performances continue to pile up.
