Women and girls to get more sporting opportunities thanks to a £200,000 fund
Women and girls can look forward to plenty of sporting opportunities around Canada Water and Rotherhithe thanks to a £200,000 sponsorship package.
Canada Water Dockside developers Art-Invest and Decathlon UK have announced funding for activities including boxing, rowing, football and cricket – many of which aim to engage girls.
In Southwark, just 28.8 per cent of women and girls exercise at least 30 minutes a week, compared to 40.2 per cent of men.
Luka Vukotic, Partner at Art-Invest Real Estate, said: “This year there has been a clear demand for help in encouraging women and girls to be physically active and we hope that with the range of programs we are launching in support this year, be able to offer something positive.” Impulses for promoting better participation of women in the region.”
The fund was first announced in 2022 and now that the recipients have been selected, £200,000 will go to six different local sporting activities over the next five years.
This includes weekly football training sessions at Millwall Community Trust, with a particular focus on girls-only training sessions.
Southwark Park Cricket will offer weekly women’s training sessions and will use the funding to buy new equipment.
The London Youth Rowing Club will continue to encourage young people to row, while the Roosters Boxing Club will offer weekly training for children and women in Rotherhithe.
Finally, the fund will support further weekly tennis training sessions at Southwark Park’s Youth Tennis Club and the Docklands Settlements Community Center will receive a new £10,000 artificial grass pitch for 5 players.
Art-Invest is preparing details of Canada Water offices in new planning applications
Delphine Mazillier, Corporate Social Responsibility Leader at Decathlon UK said: “I am so proud that we are now entering the second year of our collaboration with Art-Invest to support six wonderful charities in and around Southwark. I can’t wait to see the impact of this funding as we strive to integrate sport into the lives of a number of underrepresented groups.”
Art Invest’s The Canada Water Dockside project comprises a massive new office and retail development on Canada Water Dock in Rotherhithe.
According to the plans, Canada Water Dockside would be the ‘gateway’ to a number of new developments in the area, most notably British Land’s Canada Water Master Plan.
24- and 10-story buildings will be constructed directly east of the dock, with a 13-story building behind.
