‘You’ Is the Latest Series to End on Its Own Terms
Joe Goldberg closes in on a final kill. Netflix has announced the fifth season of You, with Penn Badgley as an identity-shifting stalker and serial killer, will be his last.
You are Set in London and released in two parts in February and March, the fourth season ended with a massive twist that accidentally brought Joe back to his season one turf in New York City. “He’s not on an arc of salvation,” says Badgley vanity fair where his volatile character goes. “This seems to be a question that’s on people’s minds, but I don’t think anyone doing this is interested in exploring this. This indicates something [and] it is not what we are here for.”
showrunner Sera Gambling, who had been with the series since it premiered on Lifetime in 2018 before it was acquired by Netflix, is leaving the show to “focus on new projects,” she said in a statement. “Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and a lot of fun. And I’m fortunate to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgley,” Gamble continued. “I am proud of what we have all achieved and feel privileged to pass the torch on. I look forward to seeing and supporting this You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted ending.”
Executive producers will slip into their roles Michael Foley And Justin W Lo, who have been with the series since the beginning. In a statement, fellow EPs Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter confirmed that Gamble will remain an executive producer and that the duo plan to “bring her every idea we can of our company for years to come.” They shared that too You, related to Caroline Kepnes novels, was “always conceived” in five seasons.
Call it a savvy creative impulse or a savvy contract decision, but television is in for a little five-year itch right now. You is the latest in a string of popular shows to announce they’re pulling the plug after four or five seasons after Netflix stranger things, Prime video Glorious Mrs. Maisel, and HBO’s barry And succession, most of which will air their final episodes this spring. The story of the maid scheduled to end sometime this year after six seasons, and the brass behind it Teddy Lasso also vaguely alluded to a three-year run on AppleTV+.
A release date for You are final – possibly less sexualized – season has yet to be announced.
