Arsenal vs Sporting Lisbon Europa League live score and goal updates, Man Utd win

Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon went the distance at the Emirates Stadium after a stunning Pedro Goncalves goal drew the visitors level

Real Betis vs Man Utd: Pictures

Arsenal made five changes for the second leg against Sporting as Gabriel Jesus returned to the starting line-up with the tie finely poised at 2-2.

Both Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were handed a rare rest as Jesus, back from knee surgery, came in to lead the line.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jorginho, Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson were also drafted in while Ben White, Thomas Partey and Leandro Trossard dropped out.

Arsenal went ahead inside 20 minutes, Granit Xhaka finishing coolly after Gabriel Martinelli’s initial shot had been saved by Antonio Adan.

The Gunners lost Tomiyasu and William Saliba to injury either side of Xhaka’s goal as they went in at the break 1-0 ahead, leading 3-2 on aggregate.

Sporting were level just after the hour mark and in remarkable circumstances.

Pedro Goncalves spotted Aaron Ramsdale off his line and brilliantly lobbed the England goalkeeper from just inside the Arsenal half.

Neither side could find a winner in normal time at the Emirates Stadium as the game went into extra-time.

Arsenal starting XI: Ramsdale; Zinchenko, Gabriel, Saliba, Tomiyasu; Nelson, Xhaka, Jorginho, Vieira; Martinelli, Jesus.

Follow all of Thursday’s football news below…

Big save from Adan!

That was the chance for Arsenal to win it as Chermiti plays a horrendous backwards pass that is straight to Trossard.

The Belgian races through and attempts to lift his effort over the Sporting keeper but he sticks out a big paw to divert the ball onto the post.

Full-time whistle blows

We’re heading to extra-time at the Emirates Stadium.

It finishes 1-1 after 90 minutes, meaning a 3-3 aggregate scoreline.

If there’s no more goals, we’ll be heading straight to penalties.

GOAL SPORTING!

And what a strike from Pedro Goncalves to level the tie at the Emirates Stadium!

Arsenal sloppily give the ball away in the heart of midfield and the Portuguese breaks forward. Barely in the Arsenal half, he tries and audacious effort from the half-way line that flies in over Ramsdale.

That is simply stunning.

Back underway

We’re moving once more at the Emirates and Arteta has made another change as Gabriel Jesus comes off for Leandro Trossard.

That seems slightly more of a planned change from the Arsenal boss.

Half-time from the Emirates

The whistle goes in North London and it’s so far, so good for the Gunners.

They lead 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate following Xhaka’s opener.

It’s not all been good news for Arteta’s side though with William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu both being withdrawn through injury.

GOAL ARSENAL!

Arsenal have not allowed their confidence to be knoacked as they take the lead against Sporting!

Martinelli races through and attempts to curl past Adan. The Spaniard saves but only parries into the path of Xhaka who strokes home confidently.

Arsenal hit with injury blow

Whilst Jesus has provided Arsenal a big boost this evening, the Gunners have been hit with a defensive injury blow.

Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu has been taken off just minutes into their clash with Sporting Portugal in North London after appearing to overstretch when attempting a tackle.

He has been replaced by Ben White.

Underway at the Emirates

And we’re straight into our second lot of games this evening and Arsenal are underway against Sporting Portugal.

Follow along for the latest updates.

Man Utd secure quarter-final spot

Arsenal team confirmed

We’ve got another of our English clubs in European action this evening with Arsenal taking on Sporting Portugal at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta has named a very strong starting including Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus. Take a look at the full side below:

GOAL MAN UNITED!

That’s the way to do it as the Red Devils take the lead through Marcus Rashford!

The England striker takes aim from distance and his dipping effort finds the far bottom corner. That should be that for United!

Back underway

We’re rolling again in Seville as Bruno Fernandes gets the game underway.

Could we be in-line for a miracel turnaround from Betis or will Man United progress with ease?

Half-time across Europe

It’s also half-time from the other games across Europe.

Juventus are in control against ten-man Freiburg courtesy of Dusan Vlahovic’s penalty. Feyenoord are also all-but in the next round as they lead 3-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fenerbahce have also given themselves a chance by taking the lead against Sevilla.

Weghorst misses sitter

Wow, Man United have a golden chance to take the lead on the stroke of half-time but Wout Weghorst has somehow missed the post.

From a deep free-kick, the ball is tossed into the box and Harry Maguire knocks down. It looks a simple task for Weghorst but he’s left stretching and his attempt hits the post.

The half-time whistle then blows as the first-half finishes goalless.

Feyenoord easing towards next round

Whilst there have been no goals in Spain, Feyenoord look set to take their place into the next round of the competition.

Santiago Gimenez and Orkun Kocku have scored for the Dutch side against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chances come and go for Betis

It’s been a very bright start for the hosts in Seville.

Former Southampton striker Juanmi has put a glorious chance wide before Betis legen Joaquin has seen an effort hit the outside of the post.

Man Utd’s three-goal advantage is still intact but they need to be careful.

KICK-OFF!

We’re underway in Seville as Manchester United attempt to seal their place in the next round of the Europa League.

There’s another three matches kicking-off throughout Europe, too. Freiburg welcome Juventus to Germany, whilst Feyenoord take on Shakhtar Donetsk. Finally, Sevilla will be aiming to seal an aggregate victory over Fenerbahce.

There’s also Conference League action as throughout the evening so stay tuned for updates.

Man Utd make Bellingham intentions clear

Manchester United will battle Liverpool and a host of elite European rivals to sign Jude Bellingham this summer transfer window.

The Borussia Dortmund wonderkid is the most in-demand midfielder in the game after a meteoric rise with the German giants, as well as England at international level. He does not turn 20 until the end of June but Bellingham has already racked up 53 goal involvements across 189 appearances for club and country.

Infantino drops FIFA 24 hint

Gianni Infantino has provided an update on FIFA’s new video game series, with the FIFA president potentially disclosing that FIFA 24 may not be made.

Infantino was speaking at the FIFA electoral congress in Rwanda today after being re-elected for another four years as the head honcho of the governing body. And, the 52-year-old spoke about plans for FIFA’s upcoming video game series, claiming they will have news on it “very soon”.

Ten Hag’s Ferguson praise

Erik ten Hag has hailed Sir Alex Ferguson’s “eye for creativity” as he looks to emulate the title-winning manager at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag and Ferguson met for dinner in February ahead of United’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, and plenty of fans would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that meeting. While some aspects of their conversation are likely to remain a secret, the victory at Wembley speaks to the job the new manager has done both before and after meeting the Scot.

United haven’t won the Premier League since back in 2012-13, when Robin van Persie top-scored to help them to glory in Ferguson’s final season. It seems fitting, then, that Van Persie was the one to hear his compatriot’s stance on Ferguson during a BT Sport interview.

Napoli owner’s Thatcher comment

The Napoli owner has called on the Italian Prime Minister to show “the courage” of Margaret Thatcher to stamp out hooliganism after claiming there was “guerrilla warfare” last night in the southern Italian city.

And the mayor of Naples admitted: “For a few hours the city was held hostage by German and Neapolitan thugs.”

Eintracht Frankfurt fans were banned for the second leg at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but hundreds still travelled to Naples to join up with Atalanta Ultras. And they clashed with Napoli supporters in running battles in Naples, just eight days before England play a Euro 2024 qualifier in the city. Eight people have so far been arrested – five Italian and three German.

Ten Hag ignores Neville advice

Erik ten Hag will not be swayed by the opinions of those outside of his Manchester United staff it would seem, as proven by his handling of winger Anthony Elanga.

The young Swede burst onto the scene last season while Ralf Rangnick was at the helm as interim boss, but has seen his Red Devils career stall under Ten Hag this term. So much so, that the United manager is preparing to send Elanga out on loan next season to try and further his development.

Having fallen behind another exciting young prospect in Alejandro Garnacho in the pecking order, Elanga has found first-team football hard to come by this season and started just seven games. As a result, a temporary spell away from Old Trafford has been touted as the best thing for the 20-year-old.

Arteta gives Smith Rowe advice

Mikel Arteta has told Emile Smith Rowe he needs to prove “his qualities” to regain a spot in Arsenal’s starting XI.

Smith Rowe, 22 has not started a single game in any competition for Arsenal this season. That is mainly due to the groin injury he sustained in September, which has caused him to miss several fixtures and ruled him out of contention for the World Cup in Qatar.

The England international has played fewer than 150 minutes of football this term and was recently hooked during the 3-2 win against Bournemouth, despite being a substitute himself. Yet Arteta insists academy graduate Smith Rowe is still part of his plans.

Spalletti aims dig at Guardiola

Luciano Spalletti believes Pep Guardiola is playing a “game” after the Manchester City boss heaped praise on the impressive Napoli manager.

Guardiola claimed Napoli are “perhaps the best team in Europe” after City’s win against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday. City could be drawn against Napoli in the quarter-finals after the Italians knocked out Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Napoli are 18 points clear of Inter Milan at the top of Serie A and look set to win their first title in 33 years, when Diego Maradona was leading their attack. Despite this, Spalletti is not impressed by Guardiola’s comments and has highlighted City’s huge transfer budget.

Mourinho makes feelings clear on ‘ghost goal’

Jose Mourinho has once again taken aim at the ‘ghost goal’ Liverpool scored against Chelsea in the semi-finals of the 2005 Champions League.

The Portuguese boss was in charge of the Blues at the time, in what was his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge. After drawing the first leg in London, Chelsea travelled to Anfield, with the Reds scoring the tie’s only goal after just four minutes.

There remains huge controversy over the decision to award that goal, with members of Chelsea’s team that day remaining adamant that it did not cross the line. Mourinho is clearly one to hold sore feelings about it, having brought up the incident this week.

Salah comments spell bad news for Klopp

Liverpool are set to be without their “best player” Stefan Bajcetic for the rest of the season in the latest bitter blow to their top-four hopes.

There haven’t been too many highlights for the Reds this term, having been knocked out of all cup competitions and well out of the title picture. But Bajcetic, 18, has been the diamond in a rough season for his more experienced teammates.

Bajcetic has enjoyed a rapid rise from playing in the under 18s, to becoming a regular within Jurgen Klopp’s midfield in less than 12 months. His youthful exuberance has often shown up his senior colleagues in a position group Klopp has to refresh this summer.

Former Spurs star Keane trolled at Cheltenham

Arsenal fan and legendary jockey AP McCoy could not resist aiming a dig at former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane after spotting him at the Cheltenham festival.

Keane was seen taking part in the presentation ceremony after Energumene had won the Queen Mother Championship Chase on Wednesday. And McCoy left his ITV colleagues in stitches when he quipped: “Ex-Tottenham player… he’s never been on a winning podium before has he?”

Keane was in fact part of the Tottenham side that won the 2008 League Cup, beating Chelsea 2-1 in the final after extra-time, and the forward was quick to remind McCoy of that fact off-air.

Man Utd-linked Ajax starlet profiled

Manchester United will be busy in the summer transfer window and Erik ten Hag could use his connections at Ajax to sign an exciting young player.

Ten Hag left the Dutch giants to join United last year, but used his time at the club to his advantage in the transfer market. United shelled out over £140million to sign Lisandro Martinez and Antony from Ajax in the summer – and they are interested in returning to Amsterdam for more players this year.

Amourricho van Axel Dongen is a player that Ten Hag knows well, having overseen his progression through the club’s academy to the first team. That relationship could stand him in good stead when it comes to the summer transfer window, with Van Axel Dongen potentially available.

Ferdinand spots concerning Liverpool trend

Rio Ferdinand is the latest pundit to criticise a trio of Liverpool players as part of a worrying trend that shows Jurgen Klopp’s men have not learnt from their defensive mistakes this season.

The Reds fell to a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid thanks to a late Karim Benzema goal on Wednesday night, being dumped out of the Champions League in the process. The loss came days after Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten by Premier League relegation strugglers Bournemouth.

It leaves their season heading for a damp squib, with Klopp’s men now only having a place in the top four to play for. At the heart of their problems has been their openness at the back, with Ferdinand taking aim at Trent Alexander-Arnold for his role in Benzema’s strike.

Arsenal fans debunk Ten Hag theory

Arsenal fans have quickly and confidently debunked Erik ten Hag’s ‘lucky’ theory ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League games involving Manchester United and the Gunners.

Ten Hag raised eyebrows on Wednesday afternoon, when he claimed Mikel Arteta’s squad is “totally available” at the Emirates. The former Ajax manager noted the amount of injuries and suspensions his side have encountered this season.

Yet several Arsenal players have suffered serious injuries this term – including Gabriel Jesus, Emile Smith Rowe and Mohamed Elneny. The likes of Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney have also spent time in the treatment room, while Eddie Nketiah is currently out.

Klopp has already told Carragher his thoughts on Alexander-Arnold

Jamie Carragher’s scathing assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending has raised plenty of eyebrows but it is unlikely to change Jurgen Klopp’s stance on the matter.

Liverpool were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night following a 1-0 defeat by Real Madrid, though in truth the tie was lost in the first leg at Anfield where Los Blancos ran out 5-2 winners. Elimination from the competition marks another low in what has been a season full of them for the Reds and Carragher’s comments make for difficult reading from a Liverpool perspective.

After the 6-2 aggregate loss, the Anfield legend was in no mood to mince his words as he took aim at Alexander-Arnold and his defensive ability.

Toney scored his 16th goal of the season to hand Brentford a 2-0 win. Thomas Frank laughed when told of Toney’s target before adding, “He is a fantastic player to work with that optimism and belief transmitting to the team. An unbelievable winning mentality.”

Madrid defeat could have Bellingham transfer impact

Liverpool’s convincing exit at the hands of Real Madrid may prove the deciding factor in the race for Jude Bellingham.

That’s the view of BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand, Peter Crouch and Michael Owen, who all think the Reds could miss out on the generational talent. Jurgen Klopp’s side were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, losing 6-2 on aggregate to the European champions.

The majority of the damage was done in the first leg at Anfield where Los Blancos ran riot to take a three-goal lead back to the Spanish capital. And at the Bernabeu, any faint hopes of a miracle comeback never really materialised with Karim Benzema scoring the only goal in a routine 1-0 victory.

Rice to Arsenal transfer theory emerges

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon has admitted he is ‘not convinced’ the Gunners will pursue West Ham midfielder Declan Rice this summer despite reports claiming otherwise.

Recent speculation has suggested that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has made the Hammers captain his priority target in the next window, though the Gunners are not alone in their interest as fellow ‘big-six’ sides Manchester United and Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Rice’s situation in east London.

West Ham had originally hoped to fetch as much as £100million for the England international’s signature, but with their hopes of Premier League football for another season not yet certain, the Hammers could be forced into accepting less for Rice should they be relegated to the Championship.

BREAKING – Bajcetic out for season

Liverpool star Stefan Bajcetic has been ruled out for the rest of the season with injury.

Bajcetic has been one of the stars of the Reds’ campaign, which has been a serious disappointment, with the Reds out of the FA Cup, Champions League and the Premier League title race. It marks a serious blow for Jurgen Klopp, who will now have to do without one of his best midfielders.

He has made 19 appearances so far this season, scoring one goal as he earned a place in Klopp’s starting line-up. The midfielder confirmed the devastating news in an Instagram post, having been left out of Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Henry delivers Man Utd transfer verdict

Premier League legend Thierry Henry has told Manchester United that they should prioritise a move for Tottenham talisman Harry Kane over in-form Napoli ace Victor Osimhen.

The Red Devils are on the prowl for a new striker in the summer to try and ease the goal-scoring burden on Marcus Rashford and a number of high-profile targets have been touted. However, the two names that continue to crop up are Kane and Osimhen, who are both currently enjoying stellar seasons with their respective clubs.

As things stand, Kane’s league tally is a remarkable 20 goals in 27 games, while Osimhen has bagged 19 in 22 Serie A outings. Some fans and pundits alike have suggested United pursue the Nigeria international given his more attractive age profile, as Osimhen is five years younger than Kane.

Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen believe Liverpool’s season will be defined by their next three Premier League games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night after suffering a 6-2 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in the last 16. The Reds lost the first leg 5-2 at Anfield before Karim Benzema’s second-half goal settled the return game.

Vieira agrees with Smith Rowe comparison

Fabio Vieira has compared himself to Bernardo Silva ahead of Arsenal’s second leg against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League.

Vieira joined the Gunners from Porto for £34million in the summer but has played a limited role in their title charge, starting just two Premier League games. He arrived in north London with an injury, but has gradually become more involved in Mikel Arteta’s side, picking up two assists in his past five appearances.

The 22-year-old could be involved in Arsenal ’s second leg against Sporting on Thursday night after setting up a goal in their 2-2 draw in Portugal last week. Vieira is convinced he can make a difference for the Gunners and compared himself to Manchester City star Silva in the pre-match press conference.

Carragher’s critique of Alexander-Arnold in full

As Liverpool suffered a not-entirely-unexpected exit from Europe, Trent Alexander-Arnold bore the brunt of questions from former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

Most of the damage had been done in the first leg, when Real Madrid came from behind to secure a 5-2 victory at Anfield. It was a quieter affair at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, with Karim Benzema scoring the only goal of the game to ensure the Spaniards’ progress.

Carragher accused his fellow home-grown talent of “lacking defensively” after the home and away defeats against the reigning European champions. Here, Mirror Football looks at the pundit’s comments in full as he explained his stance both on TV and on social media.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has defended his decision to bring off Darwin Nunez before the hour mark, despite his side needing a three goal turnaround against Real Madrid.

The Reds headed into the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash 5-2 down on aggregate to Los Blancos. As a result, Klopp selected an attacking starting line-up, with Nunez, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo all featuring.

Despite that, the Reds struggled to create much of note, having just five shots on target over the 90 minutes. With the game still goalless after 57 minutes, Klopp opted to make two changes, hauling off Nunez and Jota in favour of Roberto Firmino and Harvey Elliott.

Gabriel Jesus has recently returned following a lengthy injury lay-off and was handed some minutes in the win over Fulham on Sunday. The Brazilian could be further eased back into action by featuring on Thursday night with Arteta demand a notable improvement on their showing last week.
