Nine-piece ensemble Ben&Ben stepped out of their comfort zone for their latest single “Could Be Something,” which appropriately taps into the idea of risk-taking.

The “Kathang Isip” hitmaker released the groovy yet relaxing track on June 30, offering listeners a new sound paired with a retro-inspired look.

During the media conference for the single’s release on June 27, one of the band’s lead singers, Paolo Guico, shared how they came up with the song, which he says came about “organically.”

“Gumawa did a demo and then we jammed as a band. And then we started to really take those risks for this new chapter of the music for the band (We did a demo and then jammed it as a band. And then we started to really take those risks for this new chapter of our band music) ‘ he shared, adding how they were inspired by different things, like the music around them and the people they meet – as well as their clothes and their stories.

He also recounted an encounter with a random person whose experience is reflected in the song’s narration. While he was having lunch with his twin brother, the band’s other lead singer, Miguel, someone approached them and told them “out of nowhere”: “[S]thank you very much, thank you very much for your music. Thank you for your band. “Dati, hindi na ko naniniwala sa pag-ibig, aber napaniwala niyo ulit ako sa pag-ibig.” (I didn’t believe in love before, but you made me believe again.)

At that moment, the twins reflected on how unusual it is to discuss giving up love and then someone trying to make you believe that it’s possible to love again. The single’s chorus begins with “You ade me believe in love again.”

While the lyrics of “Could Be Something” carry a romantic theme, the song’s message of overcoming doubt and taking risks can be interpreted in a variety of ways. In fact, Miguel shared that lyrically, the song was heavily influenced by “where a lot of us are at in our lives.”

“We have come to this point, na pati sa personal life namin (even in our personal life), marami rin kaming tinatake na risks (we also take many risks) like transitioning to other phases as some of us have done married. “Some of us are going through major life changes,” shared Miguel.

Percussionist Andrew De Pano shared a different perspective on the song and discussed the idea of rediscovering things you used to love to do.

“[A]After the pandemic, many things are forgotten even when meeting old friends [and] Doing things that were somehow different. So, [it’s] It’s nice to fall in love with those things again and… just continue to let your story grow as a person,” De Pano shared.

The band’s lead guitarist, Poch Barretto, shared how the production of “Could Be Something” got them to the point where they “pushed their creativity almost to the max.” He previously reiterated that the band took a lot of risks with the song and also admitted that they struggled with the record.

Ben&Ben worked with producers Sam Marquez and Timothy Run on the single, which Barretto says was “a fun and huge learning experience” for the band. He added that working with the two “took the song to a whole new level, more than we could ever have imagined for the song at the time.” Barretto also appreciated that Marquez and Run incorporated sounds that the band “of course” would not have included on their previous releases.

In addition to the Guico twins De Pano and Barretto, the other members of the band are Jam Villanueva (drums), Agnes Reoma (bass), Toni Muñoz (percussion), Keifer Cabugao (violin) and Patricia Lasaten (keyboards). Formed in 2017, the band has made a name for themselves in the music industry with singles such as “Araw-Araw”, “Pagetingin” and “Maybe the Night”. it
