SKCvVAN Quotes: “We got back to being ourselves again”
Peter Vermes, manager of Sporting Kansas City
The team’s reaction…
I think it’s the version that we as a group aim for each week. What I think at first is that the preparation and game plan was very good, but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t put it into action. Wednesday and Thursday are both very tactically oriented training sessions. The boys were very well matched and did very well today. For me, that’s the difference in the game.
What changed for the offensive in the first half…
Sometimes in games you try to find a rhythm. You’re trying to get into your flow. We certainly changed some things in this game, namely the way we do things for the opponent. It took us a while to get there, but I don’t think we did a bad job at that moment. We just needed to open up the game a bit, and that’s where we started.
That attack is more decisive…
I’m a big advocate of preparation. I’m a big believer in four-day build-ups. I think the fact that we had the opportunity to train and prepare for the team this week was a big help in my opinion. I don’t think anything we did tonight is that different from who we are when we’re on stage. I just think we’ve become ourselves again. The idea is to be the best version of yourself as you can be in any game. I think tonight we were close.
On the return of Johnny Russell…
The idea for me is always that you’re always trying to get to those places, you’re always trying to get to those places. When you’re on the field at the end of the day and the team wins, that’s positive. If you don’t get the pass or the goal, I don’t worry too much about it. It’s more about getting the three points and I don’t care how we do it. Just get the three points.
As for what he saw to attack on the right flank of the Vancouver defense…
Daniel Salloi. Look, Daniel has a great engine. His movements, his drive to get in and behind one team or another, is actually very good against everyone we play against. So I think this is an area of the subject that we will always reach. The game is different and I’ve said that a thousand times. When you have Alan (Pulido), Gadi (Kinda) and your two wingers – and we have good wingers – it’s difficult to focus on all those spots on the pitch. Now, with the other team focusing on one location, the guys have enough improvisation to find the other. I think that was a good rotation in the first half between Gadi, Daniel and Tim Leibold. It was good. They were solid in the way they did it. There was another part too. I think our defensive performance saved energy for attack and in the end we often won the ball so it only made sense to leave because they got too involved in a lot of situations.
About Tim Leibold’s performance…
I don’t think he’s fit enough yet. It was good that he was able to last 85 minutes tonight. The good thing is that (Logan) Ndenbe is back now and it was just good to get him on the field tonight and get him back in the game. That was the whole idea that we could come back. Our goal is to have all the boys back after an injury by the time the League Cup comes around, so that we can really give it a go in the end. We have to stay in the team mix. I think we’ve made it to some extent, but we still need to get a little closer to that mix. His biggest concern is that he gets fit. For someone like him, who has never played a summer season due to his childhood and youth in Germany, this is something new for him. So he has to adapt and adapt, and hopefully that will happen a little faster.
About Gadi Kinda’s performance…
He came out and said he wanted to play 90 minutes! He did it, he really did. There’s a chance he could have done that, but I think for the time he was in the game, he was in the game. He didn’t survive the game. There were other games where he played 45 and then the other 15. Then he survives. He didn’t do that today. I think he played the minutes he played today as if he was completely himself again. I think that was a good ending to the game. I really do.
About the play by Kendall McIntosh…
He did well with the team. He made progress game after game. I’m glad he got a shutout tonight. He deserves it. His distribution of the ball is progressing and I think he managed the group well tonight and made a lot of good decisions.
Sporting Kansas City midfielder Gadi Kinda
It was a good game. I feel very good. The team showed a very good performance. I’m really happy with the three points and the way we played.
I got the ball, turned around and saw I had some space. I saw Remi make a good run. I passed it to him and it was a very good goal. I am very happy.
His fitness makes him more dangerous…
It definitely helped. As Peter said, today I feel very good and different from the previous games. I’ve been in the game the whole game and I feel really good about my fitness. It gives me more confidence and I just want to keep going.
Who he draws inspiration from…
I watch a lot of players. I saw (Remi) make the run and it was in a second. I am very happy that it was a success.
Sporting KC midfielder Remi Walter
I’m very happy to have scored my first goal of the season. It helped the team score the first goal of the game, so I’m very happy about that. And then we won the game, so that’s good. It was a good run and a good grade. I hit it with my right. It was good.
On the pass of Gadi Kinda…
I know Gadi is a very technical player and I know him on the right foot. I saw the space between the two defenders and hoped he would play the ball. We were a bit lucky because when he played the ball he went under his legs so we were lucky. But it was a good pass and a good finish. That helps the team and that’s a good thing.
As for the team’s performance…
We need to take some points at home. It’s very important if we want to reach the playoffs and we know that. I think we were on our way to getting some results but the last few weeks have been a bit difficult and tough. We had a good game today. They didn’t score a goal so it was good. We scored three goals, that’s good for our confidence. It’s good for our fans and our club. Tonight is very good.
About the pace of the team in attack…
Sometimes you come out on the field and you feel good. We must not forget that we had a whole week to prepare for this game. Before that we had played every three days and were therefore a little tired. And of course, when you’re tired, you can’t handle the ball a little less well. We prepared very well for the game. We had a very good week and we showed that on the field.
Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi
To Peter Vermes’ praise for him in the post-match press conference…
I’m glad (Peter) saw what I felt too. I think I had a good game. It was one of those games where everything works except for the goal. I wish I could have scored but I’m glad we won. I honestly felt good and I think we played really well. We played really well. I’m glad it was mostly on the left side.
About the pace of the team in attack…
We wanted to be very direct about where we see the spaces and where we can take advantage of the team. We did that very well. I thought everyone played really well, so it worked.
On his chemistry with Tim Leibold…
I think the chemistry between us is more and more right. I can feel it too. I’m a bit mad at him because he hit the cross very hard and I couldn’t reach it, so I couldn’t score it. we talk about it
About the play by Gadi Kinda…
That’s my number 10 right there. I love this guy. I think he’s a really good player. I’m glad he’s doing well after a long injury. It was a great assist but also an incredible finish from Remi, who saved the ball with his weak foot. Great.
