Canada vs. Latvia: Live score, highlights, updates from 2022 World Juniors hockey tournament
The first game for Team Canada is coming up as the host nation play their first World Juniors game of 2022 against Latvia on Wednesday night.
Canada, who enter the tournament as favorites to win gold, will be without stars like Shane Wright, Owen Power, Jake Neighbors and others who are either not playing or struggling with injuries. However, the Canadian club still has plenty of star power.
Leading the team are Ducks prospect Mason McTavish, Blue Jackets draft pick Kent Johnson and top 2023 draft prospect Connor Bedard. McTavish returns, replacing Kaiden Guhle as captain of the squad, along with Johnson and Donovan Sebrango as assistants.
Latvia has already played one game. The country, which ousted Russia at the top tournament after Russia was banned from the IIHF, lost 6-1 to Finland on Tuesday to begin its World Junior journey.

Connor Bedard tracker
In each game, we’ll highlight a Team Canada player to follow during the matchup.
First up is Connor Bedard, the 2023 draft sensation playing for the Regina Pats in the WHL. He is considered the top pick for the upcoming NHL draft, which has taken the world by storm in recent years. He had 100 points with the Pats this season, had a four-goal performance at the canceled World Juniors in December and added six goals in four games at the U18 World Championships.
Extremely skilled and a prolific goalscorer, Bedard is considered a generational talent. At 17, he is one of the youngest players in the tournament.

foreplay
5 p.m. ET — Canada unveil their first preliminary round roster at World Juniors 2022. Riley Kidney replaces Brennan Othmann after a tough pre-tournament scrum from Rangers.
Our first look at Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Brennan Othmann (NYR), Ethan del Mastro (CHI) and Brett Brochu are the scratchers. Connor Bedard (2023) rides a shotgun with Mason McTavish (ANA). Should be a great duo with Joshua Roy (MTL). There are a lot of goals there. pic.twitter.com/UVEgS3f3Xc

4 p.m. — Canada coach Dave Cameron has announced that Sebastian Cossa will start the game against Latvia. While Dylan Garand is considered the No. 1 goalkeeper, Canada will face their weakest opponent of the tournament in Cossa. The team also has a back-to-back, giving Garand a breather ahead of Thursday’s game against Slovakia.
Dave Cameron says Sebastian Cossa (DET) will start for Canada tomorrow. A little surprise. There was a time in December when he looked like No 3. Back then it was believed that it was Dylan Garand’s net to lose and then Garand became CHL Goalie of the Year.
