Real Madrid vs. Eintracht Frankfurt result: Benzema scores, Los Blancos win another UEFA Super Cup in comprehensive performance

Real Madrid looked in prime midseason form, overwhelming mercurial German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2022 UEFA Super Cup for a 2-0 victory, with goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema.

The victory is Madrid’s third in the UEFA Super Cup all-time, which pits last year’s Champions League title-winner against Europa League champion. It brings Los Blancos level with Liverpool, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid for second all-time, only behind Sevilla’s six wins. It is also Carlo Ancelotti’s sixth UEFA Super Cup win in the Italian’s illustrious career, with four coming as a manager and two as a player.

The Spanish giants looked ready for the coming campaign, dealing with Frankfurt’s hard press and creating chances up front, while mitigating the danger at the back. David Alaba opened the scoring in the first half with an easy tap-in off a corner, while Benzema opened his season’s account with a second-half strike.

Frankfurt had few opportunities, as Daichi Kamada came up empty with their best chance on 14 minutes. After that, they looked toothless overall in the absence of playmaker Filip Kostic.

Casemiro was the game’s best player, marauding all over the pitch to put a lid on the Frankfurt attack and provide some threat up front as well. The Brazilian provided a headed assist for Alaba’s opener and clattered the crossbar around the hour mark.

Real Madrid open their La Liga season this weekend, with a road date at newly promoted Almeria on Sunday.

FULL-TIME: Real Madrid 2-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Real Madrid are making a habit of hoisting trophies, earning another with a comprehensive 2-0 victory, downing a simply overwhelmed Eintracht Frankfurt. It’s the first clean sheet earned in this competition since 2014, and proved Los Blancos are ready for the campaign to begin.

Eintracht Frankfurt will need to regroup for a Champions League run, with Oliver Glasner’s biggest task ahead figuring out how to replace Filip Kostic. His presence was sorely missed tonight.

90+1 min: The game’s first yellow card is handed to Lucas Alario, who came off the bench for Frankfurt. It’s been a physical battle but not one that’s spilled over into needless fouling. Credit both teams for playing a positive, attacking style that’s resulted in an entertaining chess match.

85th min: The match has fallen apart, looking disjoined as Madrid look to see the game out. Madrid makes a host of substitutions, with Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger making their Madrid competitive debuts. 

75th min: Frankfurt have a break down the right with Muani, but Casemiro defends spectacularly and ends the chance. The Brazilian has been stunning all game, cutting Frankfurt chances to pieces all over the pitch. He gets some help in the middle as Camavinga comes on, replacing Valverde.

72nd min: Madrid with brilliant creativity down the right as new substitute Rodrygo and Valverde combine, and it works a great chance for the latter on the doorstep. He misreads the situation and cuts a pass for Benzema rather than shoot himself, and it’s cut out.

70th min: In the wake of Madrid’s second goal there have been some additional changes. Luka Modric has come off for Rodrygo, with Federico Valverde dropping back into midfield. Frankfurt brings Lucas Alario on to replace Almamy Toure, changing to a back-four.

65th min: GOAL, MADRID! The inevitable Karim Benzema goal doubles Madrid’s lead! Vinicius is the creator down the left, cutting into the penalty area and feeding a square pass to Benzema at the top of the 18-yard box. The Frenchman is given too much space, and he wrong-foots Trapp embarrassingly. It looked like maybe Trapp was screened from the shot by his defender, and you can’t save what you can’t see.

The goal sees Benzema pass Raul as second-top scorer in Real Madrid history, only behind his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

64th min: Chance, Frankfurt! The Germans won’t go down quietly. Knauff, the reigning Europa League Young Player of the Year, cuts into the box from the right flank and rips one low with his left foot, but it’s just lacking the pace to beat Thibaut Courtois.

61st min: Chance, Madrid! Casemiro comes close to opening his account for the season with a vicious effort that rattles the crossbar! It’s a shot from distance that gives Trapp no chance, despite his desperate leap, but it’s just gone inches too high and pings the woodwork.

58th min: A crunching tackle by Casmiro ends another Frankfurt spell of possession. It brings a pair of changes for Frankfurt, the first of the game by either team. Mario Gotze comes on for captain Sebastian Rode, an attacking change in midfield. Lindstrom, meanwhile, comes off for the youngster Muani.

Borre remains on the pitch for now, hauling himself back to his feet after the Casemiro tackle. Frankfurt showing some signs of frustration as the referee blows his whistle for fouls in the other direction. The Madrid midfield is beginning to assert its dominance.

55th min: Chance, Madrid! The Champions League title winners come close to a second, but Trapp makes another great save! Vinicius Jr. crops up again in the penalty area, and his shot is deflected which wrong-foots Trapp, but he’s able to recover to make an awkward save.

51st min: Frankfurt break again, this time through Jesper Lindstrom, but Casemiro makes a wonderful sliding tackle to stop the chance down the right edge. Lindstrom got it back momentarily, but the chance had gone by then and his desperate cross comes to nothing.

49th min: Sebastian Rode beautifully weaves through the Real Madrid midfield, but an eventual feed to Rafael Borre is out of reach. Borre provides excellent off-ball movement to open up space, but the Colombian hasn’t been particularly dangerous himself, and could be a candidate for a substitution with Randal Kolo Muani on the bench.

46th min: The second half is under way, with no changes for either side. We’ll see if Frankfurt have made any tactical changes to their approach, or if head coach Oliver Glasner is satisfied with the overall passage of play.

HALF-TIME: Real Madrid 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

The German side looked up to the challenge over the first 25 minutes, but as the half-hour mark ticked closer, Real Madrid began to assert their dominance. That resulted in the opening goal, to which Frankfurt failed to respond.

Expect to see Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield as the second half rolls along and Carlo Ancelotti hopes to see out the match. Frankfurt could bring on new man Mario Gotze as an attacking reinforcement, but Daichi Kamada played well in the first half and it would be harsh to see him off so soon.

41st min: Chance, Madrid! The La Liga winners are starting to take hold of this match. Toni Kroos does spectacularly well down the right, and his cross comes hard to the feet of Karim Benzema. His first touch sets himself up well, but his second touch — the shot — skids wide left. Frankfurt look shook, and Kevin Trapp’s goal is being shelled.

38th min: GOAL, MADRID! On the ensuing corner following the previous saved Vinicius shot, Benzema wins the first header and directs the ball to the near post. Casemiro is there to meet it and head back across the face, and David Alaba applies the finishing touch into an empty net. Trapp was required to defend Casemiro’s touch, leaving Alaba all alone for the easiest finish of his career.

37th min: Chance, Madrid! Out of seemingly nothing, Madrid break two-on-three and Vinicius manages to rip a shot from a tight angle that requires a great save by Kevin Trapp to poke it by the post.

33rd min: Finally, Madrid with a significant spell of attacking possession thanks to brilliant one-touch passing that carves the Frankfurt midfield up. It forces the German side to commit a foul on Carvajal about 10 yards outside the penalty, which they’re required to defend, but defend well they do.

28th min: The Frankfurt midfield has been up to the task today, and while Luka Modric has been influential for Madrid, the Spanish side has failed to gain a true advantage in possession or attacking threat. Frankfurt not backing down anywhere on the pitch, physically or tactically.

There’s a pause as Modric is down receiving treatment but he’s up and play continues.

17th min: Chance, Madrid! HOW DID TUTA KEEP THAT OUT?!? Vinicius Jr was in on goal, the square pass from Benzema teeing him up with a gaping goal, but out of nowhere Frankfurt defender Tuta, a fellow Brazilian, comes sliding in to make a goal-line block. Madrid with an enormous opportunity, and somehow Frankfurt survive.

14th min: Chance, Frankfurt! The first real test of the match for either goalkeeper, and Thibaut Courtois is up to the task! Clean through on goal was Daichi Kamada, but he takes far too long to get a shot off, and under pressure from a Madrid defender, the effort is right at the goalkeeper and Courtois makes the save.

Both teams are pressing hard off the ball to great effect.

12th min: A great feed from Rafael Borre sets Jesper Lindstrom through on goal, but the offside flag ends the chance. Lindstrom did get a shot off before play was halted, which Courtois dove well to keep out.

9th min: Both teams are probing but nothing has been created in front of net just yet. Luka Modric uncharacteristically lost the ball on a lapse in concentration that allowed Frankfurt to have a slight spell of possession, but it’s wasted on a wayward through ball down the right.

4th min: Real Madrid are pressing very high, but so far Frankfurt are dealing with it appropriately. It could cause problems for them as the match progresses, however.

1st min: The players are out and Eintracht Frankfurt, the defending Europa League champions, get us kicked off!

8 mins to kickoff: Eintracht Frankfurt fans travelled extremely well last season through their Europa League journey, and reports seem to tab the number of Frankfurt fans in Helsinki at the match at least 10,000 and possibly more.

27 mins to kickoff: A trio of players from both teams are on hand to receive awards stemming from their performances in last year’s European competitions. Congrats to Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr, and Ansgar Knauff! All three are in the starting lineup for today’s match.

55 mins to kickoff: Lineups are in, and Real Madrid have gone with a powerful lineup, as expected. There’s one surprise for Eintracht Frankfurt, as new star Mario Gotze starts on the bench, with Japan international Daichi Kamada preferred.

75 mins to kickoff: Helsinki Stadium looks like a beautiful venue! The stadium was a key figure as Finland hosted the 2009 UEFA Women’s Euros, 

102 mins to kickoff: The Eagles have a lot up against them in today’s Super Cup, especially history. Only one Europa League winner has won the event in the last nine years. Overall, since the Super Cup moved to its current format, the Champions League winner has won 14 times, while the Europa League winner has won seven.

120 mins to kickoff: Six of the last seven UEFA Super Cups have gone to extra time, and no club has kept a clean sheet in this competition since Madrid did it against Sevilla in 2014. Can Eintracht Frankfurt provide enough firepower to keep up with the high-flying Real Madrid machine?

Carlo Ancelotti has developed a consistent starting lineup at Real Madrid over the last year, and it’s unlikely that will change for this match. Karim Benzema missed the first few preseason matches due to an extended summer vacation, but he is back and ready to lead the line.

Despite the arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni for big money, the defensive midfield spot is Casemiro’s to lose at this point, while Tchouameni will likely get opportunities to impress off the bench.

Up front, it’s Federico Valverde will get the start on the right wing as he has in preseason and late last year, although Marco Asensio has played well in the tune-up matches and could push for time on that flank.

The biggest question for Eintracht Frankfurt this week has been the status of playmaker Filip Kostic, who was instrumental to last season’s European success. He has been heavily linked with a transfer to Italian side Juventus, with reports a deal has been agreed. As such, he does not appear in the Frankfurt squad.

Kostic is replaced by German midfielder Christopher Lenz, with young winger Faride Alidou, a 21-year-old Germany youth international who joined this pre-season after the expiration of his Hamburg contract, on the bench ready to impress.

Hoping to take over the playmaking reigns long-term from Kostic is new Frankfurt addition Mario Gotze. The former Germany World Cup hero who joined during the current transfer window from Dutch side PSV, where he spent the last two seasons reigniting his career. However, despite starting the loss to Bayern on the weekend, Gotze begins this match on the bench, replaced by Japan international Daichi Kamada.

Look for 23-year-old Randal Kolo Muani to make an impact off the bench if starting striker Rafael Borre is struggling. The versatile French youth international was one of the few bright spots for Eintracht Frankfurt this past weekend in the 6-1 drubbing by Bayern Munich — scoring their only goal.

Real Madrid are reliant on the presence of talismanic forward Karim Benzema to score goals, and their preseason matches were proof. The Frenchman hit the ground running as soon as he returned from an extended summer break, and Real Madrid reaped the benefits when he was back on the field.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt are coming off conceding six goals to Bayern Munich over the weekend and the exit of now retired Austrian center-back Martin Hinteregger has left a void which Almamy Toure is attempting to fill. Last season, Frankfurt’s league struggles were not reflected in their Europa League run, but this is a new campaign.

These two teams seem naturally inclined to score goals and the Super Cup is a match that seems set up for that. Over the last 10 editions of the match, just one team has kept a clean sheet: Real Madrid in a 2-0 win over Sevilla in 2014. The odds reflect the prospect of goals being scored.
