Change of plans? Bayern Munich’s latest striker pursuit veers off what was expected

One thing was already clear last October: Bayern Munich would sign a striker in the summer of 2023.

Now we’re here and most fans have no idea where Bayern are headed.

Napoli Victor Osimhen? Too expensive.

Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt? Too complicated.

Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic? Out…but maybe not quite.

It’s true that Vlahović might not be the apple of Bayern Munich’s eye but he’s still somewhere on the club’s list of potential transfers. He is joined by two names initially mentioned as possibilities but then silenced on the radio: Benfica’s Gonçalo Ramos and Atalanta’s Rasmus Højlund.

Let’s see what Sport1’s Kerry Hau reports (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):

At Bayern, the search for a new striker has gone quiet, and that’s not going to change any time soon…

Nevertheless, the striker market continues to be watched closely. Dušan Vlahović remains on the radar even though interest in him has waned. Bayern also have two other options: Gonçalo Ramos and Rasmus Højlund.

In the case of Ramos, Jorge Mendes secured a mandate for the forward to transfer to a top club a few months ago. Mendes, who has been in regular contact with Bayern since deputizing for Cancelo, mentioned the name Ramos to Bayern on several occasions.

If you’re wondering why things aren’t progressing faster at Bayern Munich, Hau has an answer:

Bayern play for time. Several clubs are also looking for a striker but have not yet taken action. Currently, the selling thugs have the upper hand, driving prices higher. The buying clubs are hoping prices will come down later in the transfer window.

So what happens if Bayern Munich don’t get their man during the summer transfer window? Per Hau it is an option to give Mathys Tel a baptism of fire:

A scenario has been discussed internally over the past few days – and this envisages that Mathys Tel will receive more playing time as a striker next season. The Bavarians currently have no top candidate and do not want to get involved in activism in view of the inflated prices of the strikers. The general consensus is that instead of signing an expensive striker that not everyone believes in, give Tel a chance.

Can Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting forward do the job?

Maybe we’ll find out soon.
