As Chelsea seek their third straight win in all competitions, they will face a unique challenge under caretaker Steve Davis. Wolves are 18th in the league and have scored the fewest goals so far this season with three in eight games. This should boost Chelsea’s confidence to prevail against opposition, but anything can happen with managerial changes, especially when a former Chelsea player returns to Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa made 120 appearances for the Blues, scoring 59 goals and assisting 23 more, but during his time at the club they won the Premier League and League Cup twice. The 2017 Premier League triumph with Costa is the last domestic title won by the Blues. The Blues are arguably still looking to replace Costa’s presence at the top, but Graham Potter is hoping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goals in back-to-back games will show that Chelsea’s January signing can help carry the team .

storylines

Chelsea: The Blues can breathe a little easier after it was revealed Wesley Fofana’s injury is not as bad as first feared. The young centre-back has a knee strain so he could play ahead of the World Cup but Potter won’t be moving things forward given his injury history. N’Golo Kante has returned to training but is not yet ready for action, while Carney Chukwuemeka could be eligible for selection after illness ruled him out of recent games. With Chelsea playing so many games it will also be important to see if Christian Pulisic can earn more playing time because unless he plays Wolves it’s hard to see when Potter will start the American.

wolves: Wolves keep getting injured as Pedro Neto is likely to miss out during the World Cup with an ankle surgery. He will join the long-term injuries of Sasa Kaljdzic and Chiquinho but there are also suspension issues. Ruben Neves filled in at centre-back last time out as Nathan Collins was already absent after a red card, but Neves picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will also be suspended against Chelsea. Hwang Hee-Chan will be suitable for selection but Raul Jimenez will not, which could pave the way for a Costa start at the top.

forecast

With Wolves struggling this season, things don’t get any easier with a trip to Stamford Bridge. The Blues are going to put up a pretty crooked number into the match. Choose: Chelsea 3, Wolves 0
