Disney Reveals New Looks at Anthony Mackie’s Latest Captain America Role (Photos)
A new Disney documentary included behind-the-scenes footage of Anthony Mackie’s final performance as Captain America.
So far, the MCU has seen little of Sam Wilson since he officially landed the role of Captain America The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
But even though he’s been absent from the big screen and Disney+, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t wielded the shield.
Disney is highlighting Anthony Mackie’s latest role as Captain America
National Geographics Fulfill the wish: Disney’s newest cruise shipwhich released on February 17th on Disney+ included a segment showing Anthony Mackie filming his latest portrayal of Captain America.
Several Marvel stars, including Anthony Mackie, reprized their MCU roles for Avengers: Quantum Encountera cinematic Marvel dinner show offered at The Worlds of Marvel restaurant aboard Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish.
In the show, Cap arrives on the Disney Wish cruise ship to help Ant-Man the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel stop Ultron’s pursuit of the brand new Pym technology known as Quantum Cores.
In a recent interview, Disney Imagineer Danny Handke explained this to The Direct “Anthony [Mackie] was filmed in Los Angeles” while other Marvel actors were filmed in other locations around the world:
“We were shooting Paul and Evangeline as they were preparing to produce ‘Quantumania,’ and then Anthony was shot dead in Los Angeles. He was out here for the opening of the Avengers campus and then stayed an extra day to play and film with us. So we have Anthony. So, yes, each one was shot separately and then we just had to bring them all together.”
In the documentary, Mackie is shown in his handy Captain America suit while filming various moments of the show.
Other shots show him in action while carrying the iconic Captain America shield.
Bethany Jones, Writer and Producer of Make the Disney wishtold The Direct that her team spent “Three days of behind-the-scenes filming of the ‘Avengers: Quantum Encounter’ show…” but only “One Day with Captain America:”
“In all, we spent three days filming behind the scenes of the ‘Avengers: Quantum Encounter’ show for the Worlds of Marvel restaurant. A day with Captain America and two days to film some stunt sequences and the cameo of The Seagull – who appears larger than life in the final dinner film. The other Marvel actors were filmed at a different time.”
Given Marvel Studios’ reputation for secrecy — something Mackie herself has discussed — it’s rare for a Marvel actor to appear on set as their MCU character.
And while Marvel’s own documentaries, such as Marvel Studios: Assembledhave captured similar moments before, Make the Disney wish is one of the first non-Marvel productions to do so.
According to Chad Cohen, the director, writer and producer of Make the Disney wishfilming the actor’s cameo was one of the first scenes his team shot and required “many permissions:”
“The behind-the-scenes shoot with Anthony Mackie for The Worlds of Marvel Restaurant happened a few weeks after we launched, so we didn’t really know what it was or how it was going to happen. cool You I can imagine that you can’t just show up with your camera and film it all. There are a lot of permits and things to get and people to sign out.”
In addition to Mackie in costume and appearing in front of a green screen, the documentary takes it a step further by revealing the show’s animations of Cap as he battles Ultron-bots on the ship’s upper decks.
While it’s unlikely Anthony Mackie’s hero will be fighting on a cruise ship in 2024 Captain America: New World Orderthese sequences serve as a preview of what is to come.
Why Cap Can Cameo All Day
Avengers: Quantum Encounter It may be Anthony Mackie’s most recent Cap appearance, but it’s not his only appearance.
Not only did he appear in a Marvel-themed Hyundai commercial, but he also appeared in costume to open the Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort.
While his theme park and cruise ship gigs contribute to Disney’s own Multiverse storyline and not the MCU, these cameos will help cement his character’s new role in fans’ minds until his return to the big screen.
And as a result, this will allow Captain America 4 jumping right into his narrative with Sam Wilson fully established as the new Star Spangled Man.
Captain America: New World Order hits theaters on May 3, 2024.
