Ewan McGregor on Why He Is Sporting a Mustache, How Daughter Clara Could “Keep Her Old Dad in Work” and Why Action Blockbusters Require “Endurance”
Ewan McGregor spoke during a Sunday press conference at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival directed by Emma Westenberg about blockbuster films, why he currently sports a mustache and hopefully making more films with his daughter Clara You sing loud, I sing louderin which the McGregors face each other.
Both the daughter and the father predicted further collaborations for Sunday. You sing loud, I sing louder Premiered at South by Southwest. It’s a road trip drama inspired by the true stories of the duo. Clara co-wrote the screenplay with Vera Bulder and Ruby Caster. “I just expect them to write me a lot of roles,” Ewan McGregor told the press. “It’s a very good way of keeping her elderly dad at work.”

As the actor has oscillated between tentpole films and smaller independent films throughout his career, he might also offer insight into some of the differences for talent. “Some of the bigger action movies are slower,” he said. “It’s an endurance exercise to keep your performance and acting where you want it to be.” Finally, action sequences are often shot in “tiny moments,” whereas with a smaller film, “you’ll feel like you’re off camera for three minutes being pursued can more easily lose in it”. He shared that he’s “still trying to find that feeling in my work. I want it to feel real and real.”
When asked about the transition between small independent feature films and big studio projects, McGregor replied, “If you’re working on an action sequence, then that’s it [made in] tiny moments. When you are followed by a camera for three minutes [on a smaller film]it’s easier to get lost in it.”
He also shared glimpses of his current facial hair. McGregor directed the Paramount+ miniseries A gentleman in Moscow, which he has also been producing in Manchester since earlier this year, “is a month ahead of us,” he said in an update on progress. Based on a novel by Amor Towles, the series follows McGregor as a nobleman who is being held in a hotel room after the Russian Revolution.
His current mustache is intended for the role, but it changed over the course of filming, McGregor noted. “That’s my older, smaller mustache,” he explained. “At the beginning [my character] has big, monstrous, curly hair.” McGregor concluded, “You see the better side of it.”
On Saturday evening, the big Czech cinema event celebrated the Scottish star with the presentation of the President’s Award. Accepting the statue, McGregor said after a loud greeting to the crowd at the Karlovy Vary Fest, “I’m so lucky to do what I love and I love what I do.”
The 57th edition of the festival runs until July 8th. Patricia Clarkson is part of the jury.
