The responsibility rests with Ferrari to end Max Verstappen’s winning streak at today’s Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg after the reigning world champion claimed victory in the sprint race.
On an orange-bathed Red Bull Ring where fans are heavily supportive of the home team and its star driver, this could well be another case of a 2023 Formula 1 race going Verstappen’s way. The Anglo-Austrian team has won every race this season, with a fifth straight win in the Dutchman’s crosshairs from pole position.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz complete the top three spots on today’s F1 grid after Friday’s qualifying, followed by Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. Sergio Perez is back in 15th and trying to relive what has been a pretty miserable weekend so far, including upsetting Verstappen in the sprint. The drivers’ parade is just starting in Spielberg!
We expect the pit lane to open about an hour before the cars arrive on the grid and the pre-race ceremonies with the minute’s silence and the national anthem are scheduled for 1:45pm BST.
The lights go out at 2 p.m.
Red Bull Ring signs new F1 contract

Minute of silence planned for Dilano van ‘t Hoff

Formula 1 will observe a minute’s silence ahead of today’s Austrian Grand Prix in memory of teenager Dilano van ‘t Hoff.
The 18-year-old Dutchman died in an accident at a Formula Regional European Championship in Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday.
Van ‘t Hoff died after a pile-up at the exit of the infamous Eau Rouge corner in wet conditions.
Frenchman Anthoine Hubert died four years ago after a similar incident at a race track that has now killed 49 people.
Pit lane starts for Kevin Magnussen and Nyck de Vries

The pair, who should have started 19th and 20th, will instead start today’s race from the pit lane.
AlphaTauri has fitted a new rear wing to De Vries’ car, along with a new battery and a new ECU that goes beyond seasonal limits.
Haas has changed the setup on Magnussen’s car, and rumor has it that there will also be a new gearbox.
But that didn’t stop the Dane from producing a little tune for race day…
Christian Horner plays down the Red Bull feud

The feeling that Red Bull could capitulate in the face of the sprint duel between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez was quashed by team boss Christian Horner.
“Like I said, they talked about it,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think Checo might not have seen Max there on the right. Luckily they didn’t bother each other and a one-two is a great result for the team.
“The rules are very fair. Run hard but give each other space. [Turn] one and three, yes, in the middle it got a little tasty. I think Checo may not have seen Max.”

When Max Verstappen drove back to the pits after winning the sprint race, he requested talks with Sergio Perez about the fight for the lead.
“That first corner wasn’t really nice,” he said. “It could have been a big shunt. We need to talk about that. It wasn’t okay for me.”
He later told Sky Sports: “After the race you talk about it and Checo said he can’t see me so obviously I trust his word on that.” It’s super easy to create things like that. We went in straight away to have a little chat.”
In the press conference, he continued to downplay the dispute, saying: “We talked about it. When the moment arrives, you don’t know why it has come to this. But after the race we talked about it and it’s all good.”

Max Verstappen accused his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez of pushing him off the road before winning the Formula 1 sprint race in Austria.
Perez had to settle for second behind Verstappen while Carlos Sainz was third for Ferrari.
“He pushed me away, man,” Verstappen yelled over the radio. “What the hell?!”

Mild temperatures are forecast for Sunday’s race with the possibility of rain – although it’s bright and sunny now.
Wet conditions could occur in the afternoon, especially towards the end of the race.

Max Verstappen has dominated the weekend so far with pole position in the main race after qualifying on Friday and a pole-and-win combination in yesterday’s sprint.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz lined up behind the Red Bull in the Ferraris, but Spielberg is well behind the reigning world champion and his team at their home race.
Expect Sergio Perez and George Russell to pick a way through the midfield after poor qualifying performances, while Saturday’s disappointment will see Lando Norris look to convert his solid qualifying performance into points.
Verstappen is a whopping 70 points ahead of Perez in the standings ahead of this ninth Grand Prix of the year.
