First NBA Basketball School launches in Australia

SYDNEY, February 9, 2023 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Basketball Magic, an Australian-owned sports management company focused on grassroots basketball development, today announced a multi-year collaboration for Basketball Magic to create the first NBA basketball school in Australia and later in Sydney establish and operate this month and additional locations across the country in the future.

The NBA Basketball School is a global network of classroom-based basketball skill development programs open to young players ages 7-18.

NBA Basketball School Australia, based in the new state-of-the-art Cranbrook School facility in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, opens on Monday 27th February and is open to players of all skill levels across Sydney, NSW.

Basketball Magic has also appointed Nico Loureiro, former NBA Latin America Youth Basketball Operations Lead and NBA Global Academy Coach, as Technical Director of NBA Basketball School Australia. The NBA Basketball School curriculum, designed to develop players and provide parents, coaches and organizations with a better understanding of the improvement process, was developed by the NBA’s International Basketball Operations department in consultation with current and former NBA coaches, players, and player development specialists.

Since 2017, NBA basketball schools have been launched or announced in Argentina, Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, India, Italy, Kuwait, Lithuania, Mexico, Spain, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay.

“The NBA Basketball School provides an additional opportunity for young players to learn the game and hone their skills using proven training techniques under the guidance of established coaches,” said Carlos Barroca, associate vice president of NBA Asia Basketball Operations.

“Together with Basketball Magic, beginners and intermediate players alike have access to world-class training to improve their game and help them better contribute to their local club and country teams.”
