Frank Martin vs. Artem Harutyunyan full card results: Martin overcomes slow start to earn close unanimous decision
LAS VEGAS — Frank Martin overcame a slow start and scored a late knockdown to earn a narrow, unanimous victory over Artem Harutyunyan in a WBC title eliminator on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan.
Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) fought at a methodical pace, waiting to find open spots. However, Harutyunyan fought well in the early rounds, throwing the rounds with his right hand while Martin was inactive.
Eventually, Martin realized that the 2016 Olympics bronze medalist wasn’t going to give him what he wanted and that he needed to work his way back into the fight. There was a definite power advantage for “The Ghost,” who came alive in the sixth round, injuring Harutyunyan to the body with a straight left punch. As the round drew to a close, Martin ricocheted off powerful shots from his wounded opponent but failed to finish.
Harutyunyan struggled well into the later rounds, but his face was scarred by the damage from each Martin Power shot. Still, he was close to victory.
While Errol Spence Jr. cheered for Martin from ringside, the 28-year-old went full throttle in the 11th round, throwing combinations at his Armenian opponent. A badly damaged eye became the clear target in the final frame as Martin brought down Harutyunyan with powerful shots. Harutyunyan tried to retreat, but Martin pursued him and continued to ricochet off body shots and combos from every part of his body.
Seeking reprieve, Harutyunyan knelt, his eye rapidly swelling shut. The breather helped him hobble to the finish, but with the early laps on the bench he was hoping to force a decision.
Instead, all three judges saw the fight score 114-113, 115-112, and 115-112 in Martin’s favor.
