To stay current, Blizzard developed one PTR Server that allows players to test pre-launch updates before they are finally implemented on the world servers.

What is the PTR and what can you do about it?
The PTR (Public Test Realm) is Blizzard’s way of trying out new features before introducing them to the base game. In the case of the upcoming Dragonflight expansion, this means that you can test the revised version talent tree system, as well as several other freshly optimized in-game features.
When it comes to the public testing area, Your characters are temporary entities, and can only be used while Blizzard is hosting the server. And since the purpose is to test new updates, it also means you’re unlikely to keep any of your loot. However, since the PTR copies a clone of your main character, it doesn’t mean you lose any progress in the vanilla copy of World of Warcraft.
The public test area is limited in time and is subject to change at any time. Since the game is an ever-evolving MMO, it’s not uncommon for the PTR to adopt new features and patches on a regular basis.
