How to Make a Mop
Return to Monkey Island begins with Guybrush searching for a ship and crew to finally unravel the mystery of Monkey Island. However, after speaking to Melee Island’s new pirate leaders, it quickly becomes clear that this will not be possible. As a result, the powerful pirate decides to ride aboard the ship of his mortal enemy, LeChuck, who also happens to be planning a trip to the series’ titular island.
Of course, the first step in achieving this is to go to LeChuck’s ship, where Return to Monkey Island Players can speak to the Quartermaster and ask her for a job. Coincidentally, the crew is missing a cleaning rag, but to be considered for the position, Guybrush must first get his hands on a mop. Of course true monkey island Fashion, this proves to be anything but simple.
How to make a mop as a return to Monkey Island
If they haven’t already, players should go to the International House of Mojo in the Low Street area and pick them both up knife and the forgiveness frog from the wooden shelf in front of the voodoo lady. While on Low Street, be sure to examine the plaque under the statue of Carla, the former Swordmaster and current Governor of Melee Island. This will show that she fought valiantly in Santo Domingo, which will come in handy later.
Once that’s done, players should return to the SCUMM bar at the bottom of the docks and go through the rightmost door into the kitchen. You then have to talk to the chef, who tells Guybrush that he needs to make his own mop from scratch instead of just buying one. This means players have to track down a mopstick tree and carve a stick out of one of its branches.
Instead of going blindly into the woods in search of this rare specimen, players should instead go to Wally’s shop on Low Street and ask him to make them a map. Unfortunately, the long-suffering mapmaker needs a sample of wood from the mopstick tree to map its location. Luckily, the trip wasn’t entirely wasted as players can help themselves to one monocle from the box onto Wally’s desk while they’re here.
After picking up the monocle, players should head back to the SCUMM bar and speak to the chef again to learn that a difficult customer is asking him to prepare a dish using “ingredients” that he found during a recent visit to ate at the governor’s mansion. Speaking of governor, players should check out their re-election poster attached to a building on the left side of the dock area. This is how they learn that Carla is committed to devotion.
Next, players should head to the Governor’s Mansion and speak to Carla upon arrival. After exhausting all dialogue options, they can go to the bookshelf to the left of the stairs and examine the yellow book titled Ingredients. You can ask to borrow it, but Carla will reveal that she is still angry with Guybrush over a book he previously borrowed and never returned, and despite his best attempts to apologize, flatly refuses, to forgive him.
Luckily, players happen to have a Forgiveness Frog in their possession, although if they want her to forgive Guybrush they’ll need to personalize it before giving it to Carla. To do this, open the bag and combine Guybrush’s state-of-the-art pen with the Forgiveness frog. Players are then presented with five different choices of what to write on the frog’s back and should choose from the following options:
- Dear Carla,
- I’m sorry I lost the borrowed book.
- I appreciate that you have committed yourself to devotion…
- … as shown by your actions in Santo Domingo.
- I implemented a reminder system for myself.
That’s worth mentioning here The third option is unavailable if players have not examined Carla’s reelection poster down by the dockswhile The fourth option only becomes available after players read the plaque under the statue on Low Street. Assuming players did both earlier, they can use the options above to sign the frog and then hand it over to Carla.
Once Carla Guybrish has forgiven, players should ask her again to borrow them ingredients Book. This time she agrees, after which players should return to the SCUMM bar and give the cookbook to the chef to distract him. While he’s busy cooking the mystery meal for the difficult customer, they use the knife to cut off a piece wooden sledge from the handle of the mop by the door.
Players can also attempt to steal the chef’s mop by picking it up and attempting to exit the SCUMM bar while holding it. This leads to a humorous cutscene and unlocks the Mop Heist achievement for those playing the game on Steam.
Now that they have the Wood Sample in their possession, players should return to Wally’s Map Shop on Low Street and turn it in to get it Map to the mop tree. Now that they have a mop stick, players should return to the map screen and pay a visit to the area labeled Dockyard. Here, at the former location of Stan’s Before Owned Vessels, you’ll find nothing but a small one sponge Lying on the floor. When they open their inventory, they can combine the sponge with their newly acquired grip to get one mop. This puts Guybrush one step closer to his job on LeChuck’s pirate ship, though he must find a way to hide his identity before he can finally sail back to Monkey Island.
