3 steps to make a shield in Minecraft

If you’ve watched any type of Minecraft speedrun game, you’ll see that most speedrunners made a shield very early in the run. Because it’s actually easy to make!

#1 Get 6 planks (any kind of wood)

You can use any of the 9 current types of wood to craft a shield. And you don’t need to collect 6 planks of the same type of wood for this recipe either. For example, you can use 4 oak boards, 1 spruce board and 1 birch board.

Planks can be made from logs, peeled logs, wood, or peeled wood. Each one can give you up to 4 boards, so you only have to chop 2 blocks. But hey, don’t leave floating trees around!

If you spawn in a location with no trees, try digging down or walking around to look for special structures. They may include some planks as part of their walls, like the mineshafts, forest mansions, and more!

#2 Gain 1 Iron Ingot

Iron Ingot is another basic mineral in Minecraft that you can get mainly through mining and smelting. And there are many ways to get Iron Ingots, but mining for Iron Ore and Pig Iron is recommended!

#3 Make a shield

When you have 6 planks and 1 iron ingot, right click on a crafting table and follow the recipe below to craft a shield.

Now do not be afraid of projectiles from the skeleton! Simply equip the shield in your offhand slot and right click to use the shield!
