How to pre-order the new iPad models

The Apple Store was briefly down yesterday, meaning the fruit brand has released some new iPads. And Amazon(opens in a new tab)best buy(opens in a new tab)and apple(opens in a new tab) You can pre-order them ahead of their October 26 release.

The first drop: the tenth generation iPad. A little over a year after the ninth generation, the latest iPad comes onto the scene, bringing with it a major (and much-needed) redesign. Finally, the home button is gone, the thick bezels are gone, the edges are flat, and we have four different color variants and a larger 10.9-inch screen that offers a look that’s a lot more like the iPad Air. (Unfortunately, the headphone jack is gone too).

The upgrades aren’t just aesthetic. The iPad comes with a new A14 Bionic chip, which Apple says offers a 20% increase in processing speed. The front-facing camera is now also on the edge of the landscape, which is huge for anyone who’s ever FaceTimed on an iPad and didn’t really want to look to the side. As with the Air, TouchID is on the lock button and has a USB-C charging port.

All of this comes with a noticeable price increase, with the 64GB iPad starting at $449 compared to the previous generation’s $329 (the ninth generation is particularly affordable, priced at $269(opens in a new tab) at the time of writing, btw).

For those looking for a tablet that’s more likely to replace their laptop, Apple has also announced a new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which start at 128GB of storage and come with an M2 chip. That’s the same processor found on last summer’s new MacBook Pro and Air. With so much power, this tablet is best suited for tasks like gaming with high graphics performance and extensive video and photo editing.

On the design front, the Pro looks pretty much the same as previous generations. Other new features include ProRes video recording and the Apple Pencil’s “hover” ability, which detects the stylus at a distance of 12mm from the screen and allows a preview of all markings. A laptop-like tablet also brings the price range to laptop-level levels — the 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799 and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,099.

Both the iPad and iPad Pro ship with iPadOS 16.1 and will be available again on Wednesday October 26th.
