How to run as a candidate and vote in the 2023 bencher election
TORONTO, October 17, 2022 /CNW/ – ontario Paralegals and attorneys will elect 45 licensees to serve as bankers with the Law Society of ontario until 2027.
Nomination period for bencher candidates: October 17, 2022 to February 24th2023
Attorneys and paralegals from all communities, practice environments, work areas, firm sizes and geographic locations are encouraged to apply for bencher election.
The candidate pack, including the nomination form, will be available at LSO.ca/BencherElection2023
Licensees who have never been an elected banker must complete the online form Bencher candidate orientation and training Of course, before the end of the nominations to qualify as a candidate in the election.
The course lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes information about the Law Society, the role of a bencher, the time and responsibilities involved, and the relationship with Law Society management. More information about the course is included in the candidate pack.

Voting guides for lawyers and paralegals will be available online in March. The election guide contains general information on the election process, voting, and candidates’ biographical and election statements. All licensees whose licenses are not suspended are entitled to vote in the election.
Voting takes place online April 19 to April 28, 2023 with the results announced on May 1, 2023 after counting the votes.

Benchers are members of a decision-making body called the Convocation, which meets approximately eight times a year to discuss political matters and conduct the business of administering the affairs of the Law Society.
The composition of the convocation is specified in the Law on the Bar Association which requires that the Law Society of ontario to have:
- 40 elected legal bankers – 20 elected from within Toronto and 20 elected from outside Toronto
- five elected Paralegals Bankers and
- eight lay advisers – neither lawyers nor paralegals – who are appointed by the state government.
Benchers elected to serve the 2023-27 term will take office on May 25, 2023 session of convocation.
