How To Turn Off Night Mode On The iPhone Camera

When the iPhone 11 was launched in 2019 with the “Night Mode” camera function, many iPhone users were happy about this additional convenience. Who hasn’t found themselves in the perfect setting for a photo op, only to find there isn’t enough light to capture anything with their phone’s camera? The night sky was no longer the limit for photography. Now that night mode has become standard on newer iPhone models, some may be wondering how to turn off night mode.

While the feature offers many benefits, the fact that it’s a default setting in darker environments can prove quite frustrating. After all, there’s nothing worse than getting the perfect shot at a concert, only to see a message on your camera that says “hold still” and start the countdown for the long exposure. Sure, the night mode does a great job of illuminating darker still images, but when it comes to moving subjects it can often result in blurry, overexposed photos.

There’s a time and palace to using night mode depending on what you want to record. If you want to turn off this default camera feature, do the following.

How to turn off night mode on your iPhone camera

If you have your camera settings set to Preserve settings, turning night mode on and off is pretty easy. When you open the camera in a dark environment, just tap the night mode icon (which looks like a moon with lines across it). Then drag the slider all the way to the left until it says Off.

When you open your camera again, night mode will remain off unless you manually turn it back on. Note: If you have your settings set to Keep settings, night mode will stay on until you turn it off again. If your settings aren’t set to Preserve settings, you’ll need to manually disable night mode if you’re in a dark environment and want to disable the feature.

How to check if Preserve Settings is enabled

Preserve Settings is a feature in your iPhone’s camera settings that allows you to keep the last camera mode, creative controls, exposure adjustments, night mode, or Live Photo settings when you close and reopen the app. For example, if you shoot in black and white and have Preserve Settings turned on for Creative Controls, the camera will remain in black and white when you reopen the app.

To check if Keep night mode settings is enabled, open your Settings app (the gear icon on your home screen). Scroll down to Camera, then tap Keep settings in the camera settings list. You will see a toggle option for night mode. It’s off by default, but you can turn it on to keep your night mode settings if you’d like.
